fillers are very suitable for the limited European market: they are simple and robust, quickly fill 400 to 500 bags per hour and are also CE certified. The latter is an obvious advantage, as the label is mandatory in Europe and also guarantees reliability. Among others, Belgian substrate manufacturer Eclo works with great satisfaction with the filling equipment. Salai also offers an (EU-approved) automatic production line for bottle cultivation, but there is only a limited number of potential buyers in Europe.
Satrise Chinese manufacture Zhengzhou Satrise Industry also offers a range of products. Japan is known as a pioneer in the development of machinery for industrial substrate production. However, it was written in the stars that China would surpass Japan in terms of volume. The major Chinese growers of specialty mushrooms now produce many times more mushrooms than their Japanese counterparts, which is logical considering the number of potential consumers. The competition in China has almost completely eradicated the small family-run farms, repla- cing them with immense factory-style farms that are operated fully automatically. As the European market is too restricted and small for such high production volumes, Satrise mainly offers smaller machinery here, just like Salai.
Autoclaves Autoclaves are an important product for both companies. For European substrate companies taking their first steps in the industry, an autoclave is the most essential but also the most expensive component of the investment. In our regions, these devices are unaffordable and they are cylindrical which fails to fully utilise the capacity. In Europe, rectangular autoclaves are also considered less safe than cylindrical ones, and should therefore not be used for true sterilisation at one bar overpressure. A working pressure of max. 0.5 bar is permitted, which means pasteurisation at 110° C. This temperature will not destroy all bacteria. Salai is working on obtaining a European label for its autoclaves, but Satrise currently has no ambitions to comply with our strict regulations. Despite this, their autoclaves are in high demand and marketed as low-pressure devices. But growers are not always fully aware of the dangers, they use them at high pressure with all the inherent risks… So work still needs to be done to rectify this situation. There is also no certification imminent for the Chinese fully automatic bottle systems. Strict European inspection systems could avoid some of the
