THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ Food doesn’t grow in supermarkets

These days we see politicians from around the world scrambling to respond to war, high gas prices and, of course, the refu- gee crisis. The emphasis is on the word ‘response’ because many lack true vision. Yes, there is also a slight worry about high feed and food prices as inflation is on the rise, but the real future issue has still not been grasped. For that they need to un- derstand that food doesn’t grow in supermarkets. Something that we in the farming industry know all too well. Already in the first few days of war, Ukrainian/Dutch arable farmer Kees Huizinga tried to get this issue on the table among politicians. He was sent by the Ukrainian farmers union to Europe to warn of an imminent food crisis. The picture he painted was grim, to say the least. About 50% of the worldwide sunflower market and 30% of the wheat market are supplied by Ukraine and Russia. There is a reason why the region is called ‘the bread basket of the world’. But port facilities to export existing stocks are already closed and, worse still, due to the raging war nothing has been planted or sown for the summer season. Ac-

cording to Huizinga, who farms 15,000 hectares himself, this will rapidly lead to acute food shortag- es. In his words: “I understand the political efforts on gas, but gas is less of a primary need for survival than wheat”. Without grain it will be difficult to feed people and nigh impossible to feed our birds.
