lbeit at different pace, there is no country in the world which doubts the need for vaccination against the coronavirus. Actual shots administered are only limited by availability, not by any hesitation to use them. How different is the situation compared to the fight against avian influenza. While media cover- age revolves around the Covid-19 pandemic, Europe – and other parts of the world – are struggling with the largest bird flu epidemic ever. This was reported recently by the German animal health institute Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut. More importantly, the Institute stated that the end of the bird flu epidemic is not in sight. This begs the question of whether vaccination might not be the solution here, too? In some parts of the world it is not uncommon to vaccinate against AI. And indeed, sentiment is changing in Europe as well, but at this point in time, containment and eradication are still the

preferred methods for ridding commercial poultry flocks of the virus. Experts have always said that before you start vaccinating, you need to have a strategy to stop that after a certain time to make sure the virus isn’t hiding under the vaccination umbrella. Vaccination against AI could provide a solution instead of mass culling, but is not something to be decided upon lightly. Just like the coronavirus, vaccination alone will surely not make the virus disappear. Fabian Brockötter, editor Poultry World
