here aren’t many of us, global pig editors. Yet seeing that we are after the same kind of information, quite often it happens that wherever I go, I bump into my global competitors. And unknowingly we become part of each other’s lives in a way. That was also the case at one of the deciding moments of my life, in December 2006, on a press trip organised by VIV in Thailand. During a visit to a Betagro processing plant in Lopburi province, I first got talking to my future spouse, and a VIV photographer coincidentally caught us in the act of getting to know one another.

Next to me on the picture stands my mentor and still dear friend, Wiebe van der Sluis, and to his left is that other unique specimen of a global pig editor, Nigel Horrox, founder of Positive Action Publications and also editor of International Pig Topics.


Ever since that trip, Nigel and I crossed paths regularly at events around the globe. All those years I took my hat off to


that one big achievement of him being a vet who had turned editor, something that had always amazed me. As a journalist I will never be able to also be a veterinarian. In recent years I hadn’t seen too much of Nigel – Covid-19 didn’t make travelling easy either. With great sadness I learned this month that the number of global swine editors has come down: Nigel Horrox passed away. Rest in peace, colleague.
