Once outside the village, however, it wasn’t hard to spot the virus’ presence. Fences had been placed around meadows and forests, from small sheep wires to impressive festival fences. Every gate had a sign asking passers-by to shut it once they had gone through. Not everyone had read the sign well, though, as we did spot open gates, just as we noticed fences having been pushed down by hikers. We were told locals sometimes also just steal pieces of the


fence. Fencing, however, is a key part of the authorities’ approach to fighting ASF virus. A second border fence is under construc- tion to stop the migration of wild boar once and for all (see also the feature on page 18). The theory looks great. I do hope that the local population will help to make it work.

here we were, in September, my colleague and I, having lunch in Neuzelle, eastern Germany, close to Poland. For a year this village – and many others – has been named frequently in the context of Afri- can Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks in wild boar. Finally we found an afternoon for a visit. No longer was Neuzelle just a name on the map; it now consisted of people, supermarkets, a nursery and a garage,
