32 ▶ PIG PROGRESS | Volume 37, No. 8, 2021 Study: Sows favour flavoured feed
Researchers in China set out to evaluate the effect of flavoured feed on reproductive performance and faecal microbiota of sows during late gestation and lactation. In a study published in Animal Nutrition, 20 healthy Yorkshire sows were arti- ficially inseminated with semen from Landrace boars and fed a soybean basal diet either unsupplemented or supplemented with 1 g of flavour/ kg diet (milk flavour) from day 90 of
gestation to 25 days post-farrowing. The researchers found a trend of in- creasing average daily feed intake of sows with the addition of flavour in maternal diets. The team wrote: “Dietary flavour supplementation improved the re- productive performance of the sows, which was associated with enhanced beneficial microbiota and decreased potentially pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of the sows.”

On-demand: Webinars on tackling gut bugs
In cooperation with Boehringer Ingel- heim and Biomin, recent Pig Progress webinars explored new ways of pro- ducing pigs without the usage of anti- biotics. The webinars are available to watch on-demand for free. In two ses- sions, Asian and American audiences were targeted. In the Asian session, Dr Suphot Wattanaphansak, Chula- longkorn University in Thailand, dis- cussed the interaction of Lawsonia in- tracellularis with the gut microbiome. In the American session his place was taken by Professor Nicholas Ga- bler, Iowa State University, US. He shared results from an 18-month study that set out to determine how L. intra- cellularis challenge can impact a pig’s
physiology. The following speakers can be seen in both webinars: Rutger Jansen, Boehringer Ingelheim, shared a presentation on the effect of oral vaccination against L. intracellularis on a microbiome. Dr Anouschka Mid- delkoop, Schothorst Feed Research, focused on the importance of tackling antimicrobial resistance. Next up was Dr Nataliya Roth, Biomin. She fo- cused her presentation on the role of phytogenics and organic acids in ani- mal production and as antimicrobials and their efficacy on microbiota modu- lation. Scientist at Biomin Dr Mahdi Ghanbari explained how in recent years, DNA sequencing methods have become faster and more affordable.
