Growing up, I realised that there is also a different way of looking at this. Statistically speaking, if there’s only one buzzard, duck or hedgehog, what are the chances of the animal ending up at the road side? So perhaps, I thought, road kill is not proof of a dwindling population, but instead a sign of there being a thriving community. Something similar applies to wild boar populations. If many animals are shot in a season, it is a sign of a population that has grown. In most countries in Central Europe, the conditions are great for wild boar these days – there’s an

abundance of feed, and winters tend to be not as cold in the context of global warming. I read that in Germany’s Brandenburg state, the hunting season 2019–20 was unprecedented. In just one season, 100,000 wild boar were shot – a 30-year record. And guess what – that is the state where African Swine Fever first broke out in Ger- many.

remember as a child I used to feel sorry for road kill. Every buzzard, duck or hedgehog that was lying motionless on the road sent a pain through my heart. We already have so little wildlife in the Netherlands, I used to think, and now there’s another one gone – while the raging traffic on the other side of the road spread out the pizza even more.
