Smart needle free vaccination designed to meet the needs
of the swine industry Innovative injection device allows intramuscular administration of vaccines needle free
A
dministration of vaccines with needles and syringes have been the predomi- nant method used in swine farms for decades. Although needle-syringe de-
vices are inexpensive and effective, there is an in- creasing demand for improved consumer and work- er safety by avoiding the use of needles. In addition, there is a need to reduce the pig-to-pig transmission of diseases like PRRS via needles. Henke-Sass Wolf has developed a smart needle-free device for intramuscular (IM) injection of pigs around weaning until end of nursery, which was successfully tested and improved through the help of Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health and is now ready to launch to the market. The IM needle-free
device offers smooth and painless injections of 1 or 2 ml with no recoil, low noise level and direct feed- back for the user through intelligent sensors and LED alerts. These features have been incorporated to improve the vaccination experience for both the pig and the operator. In particular, users have found the LED color alerts very useful to improve vaccination compliance and reliability. LED bars on each side of the device are an optical indicator for every action that is carried out during the vaccination process. The new device has further features to improve the vaccination process including a display showing a simple user menu with information like correct vac- cination, battery level, day counter, currently set vol- ume (1 or 2 ml), time, activated sensors and Blue-
