SIMA: Paris International Agribusiness Show

BY RENÉ KOERHUIS A

ccording to the organisation, SIMA 2019 is the meeting place for inno- vation. Two start-up villages (hall 4) will showcase new talent offering

innovative solutions. The innovation village (hall 4), including the Foresight Forum, will fea- ture profiles of innovative farmers and winners of the SIMA innovation awards 2019. Another new feature of the 2019 edition is a so-called hackathon in which programmers and farming professionals will work together for 48 hours on the use of spatial data in agriculture.

Three major trends Upon acknowledging the most innovative equipment, products, techniques and services presented by the show’s exhibitors by means of 2 gold, 5 silver and 20 bronze medals, the SIMA innovation awards distinguish 3 major trends: 1. Digital tech in agriculture: from collect- ing reliable data to leveraging them for in- creasingly advanced decision-making, to acquire new agronomic knowledge

2. Machine work quality and performance in view of more complex crop operations and wider crop variety

3. Safety, working conditions and health in the workplace: requirements in- creasingly taken into consideration by manufacturers

Digital technology is first and foremost a question of collecting data on all aspects of

The SIMA exhibition is about to take off. The bi-annual event takes place from 24 to 28 February at Parc des expositions Paris Nord Villepinte. At this year’s edition, you will find tractors, machinery and solutions and concepts from 1,800 exhibitors from 42 countries.

farm production. Here, innovations apply to areas previously untouched by progress in measurement and sensors. For example, the Limacapt system by De Sangosse and Cap 2020 (Bronze Medal) helps to count and monitor the activity of slugs throughout the night. This year, various manufacturers offer solutions dealing with the need for the auto- matic and reliable recording of machine activ- ity. The connected meter by Karnott (Bronze Medal) is an entirely autonomous device which can be used to monitor the activity of any item of farm equipment. The RFID A-100 Asset Tag by Trimble (Bronze Medal) moni- tors the activity of farm equipment using Bluetooth tags that reliably identify any non-Isobus implement. The Climate FieldView platform by Climate Corporation (Bronze Medal) also incorporates an automated ma- chine data collection system. On the analysis of agronomic data, there’s Bosch’s Field Sen- sor (Silver Medal) in association with the start- up Hiphen. The system combines field sen- sors (weather station, soil probe and multispectral camera) with remote sensing data sources. It is the same type of approach that Airbus Defence and Space and John Deere have adopted with Live NBalance (Sil- ver Medal) to observe nitrogen uptake by the crop in order to detect early signs of anoma- lies. Digital technology is also about precision farming applications and, in particular, the possibility of modulating actions during work. This is what is offered by Case IH with its connected electrical weed killer (Bronze Med- al). Laforge launches the DynaTrac jig (Gold Medal) for GPS adjusting the implement relative to the tractor.

How to get there SIMA takes place from 24 to 28 February at Parc des expositions Paris Nord Villepinte from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm. A day ticket at the venue costs € 40, but if you buy it online in advance, you pay € 30. If you travel by car or bus, use ZAC Paris Nord 2, 93420 Villepinte as a destination in your navigation system. The exhibition cen- tre is on the A104 motorway, at the Parc des Ex- positions junction. RER line B will take you to the Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre from Paris-CDG and Paris-Orly airports. Tickets can be purchased in all metro and RER stations.

Bosch’s Field Sensor, developed in associa- tion with the start-up Hiphen won a SIMA Silver Medal. The system combines field sen- sors (weather station, soil probe and mul- tispectral camera) with remote sensing data sources.
