Gorlinka as a protein alternative in feed
In an effort to find cheaper protein alternatives to enrich livestock diets, Russian researchers are investigating the benefits of gorlinka feed concentrate. Gorlinka is a by-product of mustard meal preparation.
BY KAREN WILLOUGHBY, FREELANCE CORRESPONDENT T
he study on the use of this high-protein concentrate in the diets of dairy cows (and laying hens) on their productive qualities was conducted by the Volgo- grad State Agrarian University (Volgograd, Russia).
The results showed that using gorlinka in dairy cow diets increased their average daily milk yields by 5.47–7.12%.
Milk flavour difference Daily milk yields from the cows in each experimental group differed. Cows whose diets included the studied concentrate produced 27.56 kg (experimental group II) and 27.98 kg (ex- perimental group III), versus 26.12 kg in the control group (Table 1). In terms of protein content in milk, there were slight differences in flavour of milk from cows fed the protein con- centrate gorlinka in experimental groups II and III. This indica- tor was 3.26% and 3.27% respectively, against 3.23% in the control group.
Cost of compound feeds In the livestock experimental groups II and III, the profit from the sale of the received milk was higher compared to the control group by € 70.94 and € 91.92 respectively – an in- crease in the profitability of milk production of 46.67% in ex- perimental group II and 49.15% in experimental group III. Based on the results obtained during the research, there was a positive effect on production in animals that received the
