moved away from giving young calves the left-over milk (from antibiotic treated cows) for example. Youngstock management has certainly gotten more professional, as we all know that calves are the future dairy cows and the right amount of nutrients can make sure the animal grows better and produces more milk later in life, also known as metabolic programming. So calves are in focus in this issue of Dairy Global. In the article on page 6, we delve into new research that looked at the provision of fresh water in addition to the milk (replacer). This is important because apparently, pro- ducers seem to be hesitant to offer water to newborn calves, assuming it would cause diarrhoea. Also new research data has been gained in the field of mineral requirements for calves raised under tropical conditions. In the article on page 20, we take a closer look at what these types of calves need when it comes to macrominerals in the diet. Enjoy reading.
