After the storm

A cow wades in floodwater caused by hurricane Florence near Fayetteville, North Carolina, US on September 17, 2018. The hurricane formed on August 31, 2018 and dissipated on Septem- ber 19, 2018. It caused severe damage in North and South Carolina, primarily as a result of freshwater flooding. Eligible producers in those states can take advantage of a USDA emer- gency loan programme. Livestock owners and contract growers who experience above nor- mal livestock deaths due to specific weather events, as well as to disease or animal attacks, may qualify for assistance under USDA’s Livestock Indemnity Programme. Also crop farmers, who suffer losses or are prevented from planting agricultural commodities not covered by federal crop insurance can ask for assistance.
