THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ Feeding more with less
The industry is urged to use food and feed resources more efficiently in order to feed more people while saving the planet. Improving the use of by-products in animal feed can contribute to this goal. And that’s part of the reason why the EU decided to lift the ban on the use of animal by-products in animal feed. This step allows the use of processed animal proteins (PAPs) from pigs to be used in poultry feed and vica versa. The use of PAPs in ruminant feeds is still banned. The ban on the use of PAPs in animal feed was put in place after the BSE crisis in Europe to avoid animals getting infected by feed made from by-products of infected animals. However, this cross-contamination risk appears to be very low and lifting the ban is in line with the European Green Deal strat- egy to stimulate the use of by-products. Including PAPs in animal diets could for instance reduce the reliance on imported proteins such as soy, which will benefit the CO2
footprint and also relieve some of the
scarcity in the raw materials market. Another industry that will be very pleased with this EU decision is the insect business. Lifting the ban also gives a green light for the use of insect protein in animal feed. This long-awaited step has finally been taken, allowing insect protein to become a serious player in the feed industry.
