THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ Illegal versus legal
Soy has recently been in the spotlight. The reason was a report released by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) on deforestation. According to this organisation, one of the major causes of deforestation is strong Euro- pean demand for cocoa, palm oil and soy for animal feed. This is remarkable, as precisely in Europe, notable at- tempts are being made to ensure more sustainable soy. For instance, in 2015 FEFAC published the first version of the soy sourcing guidelines (SSG) − a benchmark for sustainable soy schemes. How is it possible that European soy is still related to deforestation? The punch line lies in the difference between legal and illegal deforestation. The guidelines only focused on illegal deforestation and didn’t consider legal deforestation, i.e. deforestation that is permitted by certain legislation or occurs when land is not protected by ownership. In the recently up- dated SSG guidelines FEFAC is tackling this problem by including conversion-free soy: soy that has not been grown in natural ecosystems that have been converted to agricultural land. The European Commission has taken this a step further and is working on legislation in the field of deforestation. It seems that the EU is committed to making responsible soy sourcing the standard. Let’s hope that these attempts will also be reflected in a future report.
