eed mills need to control the quality of their raw ma- terials in order to optimise the costs of their produc- tion and review the formulation of feedstuffs. The quality control plan can be complicated to set up, de-
pending on feed production volumes, the number of raw materials, and their variability. In order to manage costs and the frequency of analysis, we should consider the following aspects: - Legal needs : compliance with the current legislation re- garding the claims coming on the product label
- Zootechnical requirements : combining the nutritional requirements with the performance results
- Economic approach : Ensuring financial profit when it comes to feed manufacturing costs
- Commercial relation : ensuring customer satisfaction, by providing adequate and tailor-made feeds.
The frequency of analysis in the control plan is defined by several criteria which are directly linked to the environment of the feed mill, such as : - The volume of each raw material and its importance for formulation
- The composition variability (known or observed) - The number of suppliers involved, and their reliability - The allocated budget for these controls.
Ensuring rapid and reliable results To gain some precious time and become more reactive, feed mills use NIR technology to empower the optimisation of their control plan. As it doesn’t require any specific skills and that it takes less than one minute to provide all the main raw materials and feeds characteristics (protein, fibre, fat, mois- ture, starch …), the data generated by this tool are valorised into the formulation software to optimise the feed formula. If many different raw materials are managed every day, this can result in a lot of variability. Using conventional methods in in- ternal labs is time-consuming, it requires chemical reagents and includes many laborious steps. That’s why a NIR instru- ment helps a lot by ensuring rapid and reliable results and
