Challenging stress factors
ivestock animals are more and more challenged nowadays. In some countries litter size can reach up to 18-20 piglets. With productivity rising it is wise to have a closer look at the stress factors animals are facing. Such as mycotoxins, it is clear that these toxins have a major effect on their general condi- tion. Last month the World Mycotoxin Forum meets IUPAC took place in Belfast, where 87 speakers
presented their current knowledge on mycotoxins (see page 14). Climate change appears to be one of the major challenges as it affects the occurrence of mycotoxins. Besides that, temperature differences also cause stress to the animals and therefore influence production and physiology. With wintertime around the corner All About Feed looked at the effects of cold stressed cattle, read about it at page 15. Challenging our animals will force us to go back to the basics and study physical processes in detail. For instance, It is clear that diet can have a great impact on the intestinal microbiota. Researchers have unravelled the role of die- tary fibres in gut health and review new ways of characterising fibre. It appears that the time factor has a notable effect on nutrient digestion. Read about these worthwhile studies on page 19 and 21.
