Ukraine’s biotechnological company Epikur has posted a petition on the website of the national Parliament de- manding to limit the use of feed anti- biotics in the country. If signed by 25,000 citizens by 5 December 2019 the petition would be passed to the Parliament hearing to be considered as a draft bill. The authors of the appeal raised concerns over the antimicrobial resistance and superbugs, claiming that “there was no statistical informa- tion that would be registering the use of antibiotics in food industry, which is

Effect of flavonoids on ruminants


Researchers from Kansas state universi- ty published a review regarding the ef- fect of flavonoids on ruminant produc- tivity. Flavonoids are a class of polyphenols known to have anti-in- flammatory and anti-oxidative func- tions. Supplementation with flavonoids appears to be most beneficial during periods of stress. In growing ruminants, flavonoid supplementation did reduce the severity of pathogenic and non- pathogenic diarrhoea and had little im- pact on metabolism, health status, or growth parameters. Flavonoids less- ened the drop in ruminal pH and re- duced the inflammatory state of cows fed a high grain diet and during in- duced subacute ruminal acidosis.


Milk yield was increased in most stud- ies over the transition to lactation, but milk component responses were var- ied. Milk somatic cell concentration was often reduced by dietary flavo- noids, and they have been effective at suppressing inflammation and apopto- sis in pathogen-induced mouse masti- tis models. Further research is warrant- ed to investigate the potential of flavonoids to reduce mastitis in dairy cows. In addition, several studies showed that supplementing different flavonoids to dairy cows during the transition period had potential to re- duce postpartum inflammation, endo- plasmic reticular stress, and hepatic lipid accumulation.
