GOVERNANCE

The latest from SCI HQ

SHARON TODD CEO of SCI

We recently saw the Committee on Climate Change alter its recommendation on an emissions target for the UK, the new advice is to completely eliminate net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 – a move that would impact many business and sectors.

Sustainability and clean growth are at the

forefront of SCI’s priorities for its future, and many of our upcoming major events over the next year have sustainability as a core theme. It is also the overarching driver of change in the chemical industry, as highlighted in the Chemical Council’s 2018 Strategy. SCI has continued to work closely with the Chemistry Council’s Innovation Committee developing its strategy and now a Sector Deal.

The Sector Deal, however, is not the end of this work, and the Chemistry Council and its Innovation Committee are now focused on the implementation of the Chemical Industry Sector Deal and the Council’s Strategy that was launched in November 2018. To meet the Chemistry Council’s

ambitious targets however, there must be

the right workforce, and at SCI, we are coordinating research on skill requirements across the sector – what we have, what we need, and how we can achieve it. As ever, we will continue to update you on HQ activities via our website and other channels.

I am delighted that a new SCI Canada awards nominations committee has now formed and is working hard towards selecting worthy recipients for prestigious Canada awards, including the highly coveted SCI Canada medal, established in 1939. More news to follow soon. We look forward to celebrating our community’s

achievements at our AGM, which is being held this year on Wednesday 3 July 2019 at our Belgrave Square HQ. Following on from last year’s ten-year

anniversary of SCI’s Horticulture Group, this year we will be celebrating 30 years of our Young Chemists’ Panel (YCP) at our Summer Reception with guest speaker, Chris Hill, executive director of Chemistry at Charles River Laboratories and the first chair of the YCP (1992-94). We hope to use this opportunity to reconnect with past YCP members, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry across the globe. I look forward to seeing you all at the 138th AGM and Summer Reception.

Update on 138th AGM

We are delighted to announce that a wide range of members put names forward for places in the SCI’s governance structure. It is likely that voting will be limited

this year due to a close fit between the number of available spaces and the candidates applying. However, members will still be

requested to vote for any Resolutions. Please watch out for further updates, voting will be open in early June. A reminder that electronic voting

is now the default option for voting in the process. The electronic voting system allows you to register your vote online quickly, with all the required documents available to review as you go through the voting process. A biography for each of the

candidates will be available in the AGM pack, which you will be able to download from the SCI website.
