Specialty chemical and ingredient sales and marketing company American International Chemical, a subsidiary of LBB Specialities, has appointed Darren J. Birkelbach as president. Birkelbach has over 25 years’ experience in speciality chemicals distribution.


Susumu Kitagawa, professor at the Institute for Integrated Cell–Material Sciences at Kyoto University, Japan, is the recipient of the 16th Emanuel Merck Lectureship for his pioneering work on metal organic frameworks (MOFs).


US clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company Arcus Biosciences, which focuses on cancer immunotherapies, has appointed oncologist William Grossman as CMO. Grossman will oversee the company’s global clinical development strategy and operations.


Professor Sir Jim McDonald, principal of Strathclyde University, UK, is the winner of the 2019 Energy Institute’s Melchett Award in recognition of his contribution to the energy sector. As winner of the award, he will give the associated Melchett Lecture on an energy-related subject.


Dirk Voeste, previously VP in BASF’s corporate development division, has been appointed senior VP in the company’s agricultural solutions division, responsible for global product safety and registration. He succeeds Jürgen Oldeweme, who is retiring. In addition, Vincent Gros, currently responsible for the global integration management of seeds and non-selective herbicide businesses, will become president of agricultural solutions, succeeding Markus Heldt, who is retiring.


Spanish biotechnology company Bionure has appointed Lucia Septien as CMO. Septien, who has experience in drug development and regulatory roles, joins the company from French biopharmaceutical company DBV Technologies where she was CMO.


Robert Langer, professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, has won the 2019 Dreyfus Prize in the chemical sciences for his role in the development of drug technologies and tissue engineering that have had an impact on human health. The biennial award conferred by the New York-based Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation includes a $250,000 prize.


UK chemical and biochemical engineering design company BPE, headquartered in Hampshire, has appointed Karmele Sagarzazu as principal process engineer in the firm’s North West office in Daresbury. An associate member of IChemE, she has worked in the chemical and life science industries most recently with international energy and environment consultancy Stopford Energy and Environment.


UK-headquartered global biopharmaceutical company EUSA Pharma has appointed Carsten Thiel as president Europe and Pfizer’s Darrel P. Cohen as head of clinical development. Thiel brings 27 years’ commercial experience and oncologist Cohen, 20 years’ experience of clinical development, to these newly created roles.


UK biotechnology company Evox Therapeutics, based in Oxford, has appointed GSK’s head of process development Bo Kara as VP, process development, and Gyroscope’s head of corporate strategy Simon Dew as VP, business development.


US biotechnology company FogPharma, based in Cambridge, MA, has appointed Howard Stern as CSO. Stern brings over 15 years’ experience of


biotech research and clinical development to the company. In addition, drug discovery specialist Peter Fekkes has been appointed VP, discovery bioscience.


German healthcare company Fresenius Medical Care, which provides dialysis products and services, has appointed Frank Maddux to the newly created role of global CMO.


UK-based immune-oncology company Immodulon has appointed Thomas O. Kleen as CSO. He joins from US scientific services company Precision for Medicine where he was executive VP of immune monitoring.


UK biotechnology company Immunocore, headquartered in Oxford, which focuses on T-cell receptor-based drugs for cancer and viral diseases, has appointed Mohammed Dar as head of clinical development and CMO. Dar will be responsible for clinical, operational, biostatistics and medical affairs.


German speciality chemicals company Lanxess has appointed Anno Borkowsky to its board to take responsibility for the newly-created speciality additives business. The current additives business will be split into two units: Karsten Job will head the polymer additives business and Martin Saewe, the lubricants business.


Stuart Quin will replace John Graham as CEO of the UK teleradiology services company Medica. Quin joins Medica from Synlab, the international laboratory for diagnostic services, where he was head of Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa.


Novartis has appointed GSK’s Richard Saynor as CEO of Sandoz, taking over from Richard Francis. In the interim period, Francesco Balestrieri, region head Europe at Sandoz, will act as ad-interim CEO, reporting to Vas Narasimhan, CEO of Novartis. Saynor will become a member of Novartis’ executive committee and report to Narasimhan.


UK cannabis extraction company TTS Pharma has appointed Paul Atherton as executive chairman. Chartered accountant Atherton brings global institutional and public market experience to the board.


Yposkesi, a French CDMO for gene therapy and viral vector manufacturing, has appointed Morad El Gueddari as production director, gene therapy operations. El Gueddari has 15 years’ experience of bioproduction and cell and gene therapies at various European pharmaceutical companies.
