lmost 70% of lab managers are seeking better productivity and higher throughput, according to a

survey conducted across Europe, the US and Asia by market researcher, Frost & Sullivan, with 45% reporting that they face significant pressure to process more samples. On the other side of the coin, 70% also said that productivity was largely limited by scheduled maintenance and unplanned downtime. Equipment size is also a key issue, with one in five respondents saying that the footprint of their laboratory is a limiting factor affecting their day-to-day operations. Of these managers, 75% believe space-saving designs of instruments can help overcome this challenge. Echoing these survey results,

at PittCon 2019 in Philadelphia, Dan Shine, senior VP, analytical instruments at Thermo Fisher Scientific, said: ‘Across many industries, our customers continue

to ask for increased speed, improved accuracy and greater ease of use at every stage of their analytical workflows.’ Reflecting that philosophy, Thermo

Fisher introduced a number of new combined systems. In the drug discovery and manufacturing area, the combined SMART Digest Trypsin Kit and a KingFisher Duo Prime system are said to create a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry- based (LC-MS) analytical solution that provides efficient peptide mapping. A

new liquid chromatography column provides more reliable separations for high-resolution analysis of steroid hormones and drugs of abuse. For testing food and animal feeds,

a new dioxin analyser workflow incorporates the triple quadrupole TSQ 9000 GC-MS/MS system, and enables detection of dioxins and ‘dioxin-like’ polychlorinated biphenyls at the lower levels now required by EU regulations. For craft brewers, a new solution streamlines quality assurance to improve batch- to-batch consistency. The software package is part of a solution that features GENESYS 50 and GENESYS 150 UV-Vis spectrophotometers. For pharmaceutical, food safety

and environmental scientists performing regulatory-compliant volatile organic compound (VOC) analysis, the new TriPlus 500 gas chromatography headspace autosampler provides a scalable, compact design that is reliable, efficient and capable of handling
