Gerhard Mestl, head of oxidation catalysts at speciality chemicals firm, Clariant, has received the 2017 Applied Catalysis Award from the European Federation of Catalysis Societies (EFCATS). The BP-sponsored biennial award was presented to Mestl for his work in selective oxidation of intermediate and specialty chemicals.
Global chemicals manufacturer, Arkema, previously Atofina, has appointed Hervé Castres Saint Martin as VP, raw material and energy procurement. He had been regional director of the acrylic monomers business in Asia based in Shanghai since July 2014.
The North American arm of polymers company Covestro has appointed entrepreneur Currie Crookston to the newly created position of head of innovation management. Crookston will be responsible for driving the company’s innovation strategy in North America, primarily by assisting the company’s three business units in creating new opportunities beyond their core R&D efforts.
The International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE) has honored Judith K. Jones, founder and CEO of The Degge Group, a PharmaLex company, with an honorary lifetime fellowship for her productivity in the field and for her pioneering role in the society.
Lesley Yellowlees, VP and head of the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, has been given an honorary doctorate by the University of Huddersfield, UK, for her services to chemistry. The first woman president of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Yellowlees’ interests include inorganic electro- and spectroelectrochemistry, solar energy and the public engagement of science.
Science and technology company, Merck KGaA has recognised four student chemists for their research and innovations in synthetic organic chemistry. Thomas McTeague from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) received $5000 as the grand prize winner of the Alfred R. Bader Award for Student Innovation for his work on ‘the photoredox activation of SF6 for fluorination’; Robynne Neff, Keita Tanaka and Jennifer Matsui each received £500 for their work in the field.
UK PM Theresa May has appointed former MP John Randall to the role of special advisor on the environment. The ex-deputy chief whip is expected to play a key role in post-Brexit policy on fishing and farming.

Nearly two-thirds of people in the UK (63%), including 62% of ‘Leave’ voters, believe there should be no reduction in regulatory standards that protect people and the environment from potentially harmful chemicals after Brexit, according to a survey conducted by GQR Research on behalf of pressure groups CHEM Trust and SumOfUs. ‘The only way to be sure of achieving this objective for the UK is to stay in the EU’s chemical
regulatory system, REACH , after Brexit – and it is possible for the UK to be in REACH but not in the EU, as Norway is,’ said Michael Warhurst, executive director, CHEM Trust.

Lyon, France-based Alma Bio Therapeutics has appointed Pierre A. Morgan to its board. Morgan, who has spent the past 30 years in the pharma industry, is expected to take an active role in Alma’s series A financing, which will start shortly. Alma is focusing on therapies to treat autoimmune diseases, in particular Crohn’s disease.
Dean of US pharmacy school LIU Pharmacy and VP of LIU Health and Research, John Pezzuto has received an honorary doctorate from Roskilde University in Denmark for his research on the anticancer drug resveratrol. His work has led to the understanding of the health effects of resveratrol, including cancer prevention, longevity, and obesity-related diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The Swiss Biotech Association (SBA), which represents the interests of the biotech industry in Switzerland and abroad, has appointed Michael Altorfer as CEO. In addition, Patrick Amstutz, CEO of Molecular Partners, and Filippo Riva, CEO of Humabs Biomed, have been appointed to SBA’s board of directors.
The member states of the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) have re-elected Carissa F. Etienne as director for a second five-year term. The PAHO works with countries in the Americas to improve the health and quality of life for its citizens, and serves as the regional office for the Americas of WHO.
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has appointed Bjorn Hansen as its next executive director of its management board. He replaces Geert Dancet who will retire at the beginning of 2018.
