School Transportation News Published by STN Media Group

The first confirmed student fatality of the year was a 7-year-old student in Louisiana, who was hit and killed by a school bus. The crash was under investigation as the Terrebonne Parish School District community mourns the loss of a student. Read more at stnonline.com/go/k7.

As a veteran school bus driver, I personally would be devastated if this occurred with me or any of my coworkers! For an extra safety step, put your bus gear in park, not just in neutral and with the parking brake on. Buses can still roll forward with the brake on. If no mechanical issues are found, this will be unfortunately a preventable accident. Facebook/Lucille Johnson-Williams

It truly doesn’t matter the facts, unless there was a catastrophic failure with equipment on the bus, brakes, etc., the driver will be charged. We assume full liability as drivers. If the bus driver simply didn’t see the child, it’s driver error, period. Again, without failure of equipment, the driver will be charged. It’s very sad and I do pray for all involved. My heart goes out to all involved, so devastating! LinkedIn/ Jennifer Hanshew, Director of Transportation Murietta Valley Unified School District, California

A driver’s worst nightmare. Condolences to all involved. Facebook/Brian Gill
