Awesome! Thank you so very much! I loved the article and loved all the data that was in it … everyone should read this article! Very informative. Joy Sites EAST Facilitator, Beebe School District in Arkansas

Tony Corpin’s Publisher’s Corner in the May issue of School Transportation News discussed the pressing need to reinforce safety procedures and training for students on the school bus, in light of the recent tragedy in Colorado, where an 11-year-old girl was run over by her school bus. I’m sorry to hear about Anna. It’s a tragic event. We can start to prevent this from happening again. Yes, the key element is we. Everyone is responsible for implementing school bus safety for our children. When I was a school bus driver for the Head Start program in Honolulu, I went out to every program site and talked about school bus safety as well as pedestrian safety. I brought the school bus to the students, and we discussed safe riding practices as well as safe walking practices. I even had the students go through a mock emergency exit drill, opening up all the emergency exits, and had the students, parents and school staff exit the bus utilizing the front and rear exits … I’m [a current] a CDL [holder] … here in Hawaii. I truly miss working with the kids. I wish I could get a grant to get a school bus, so I can go out to the schools and talk about school bus safety. Be safe out there everyone! There is complacency based on the unique safety system that has been designed to make school buses safe and desperation around the driver shortage. Supervisors are stressed trying to fill routes and are often driving themselves, and drivers are stressed by constant changes—doubled up and changing routes, new protocols, and of course, COVID. A Delaware school bus driver is under investigation for allegedly taking inappropriate photos of students. Read the wire report at stnonline.com/go/cp.

Being a school bus driver myself, this makes me angry and disgusted. I know pedophiles come in all walks of life and in all job positions, but I wish there was a better way to screen those who will work closely with the kids. Until they find a way, people need to always report inappropriate behavior and teach children to do the same. Kudos to the child for stepping forward on this. #ProtectOurChildren Facebook/ Denise Sherman
