been instrumental in accelerating adoption of alterna- tive-powered products.” Stephen Whaley, the director of autogas business
development for the Propane Education & Research Council, noted that there are several options for school transportation directors to choose from when con- sidering the best fuel for their fleet. He explained that ride-and-drive events that not only show the vehicle but also the infrastructure—such as at the Green Bus Summit this month—are helpful for those searching for the right solutions for their fleet. “These events allow school transportation directors to ask the right questions specific to their fleet, get a feel for the equipment, and learn how each of the fuels perform in head-to-head comparisons,” he said. “Plus, it provides them with a firsthand experience of what their drivers, mechanics, and crews will experience every day, allow- ing them to make better-informed decisions. It’s rare anyone would purchase a personal vehicle without a test drive, and the same should be true for a fleet.” He added that common questions center around
cost. However, he noted an exciting trend in school transportation is directors asking about how to improve emissions. “When I talk with school transportation direc- tors about approaching conversations around alternative
energy sources, I encourage them to think about their specific fleet and how they run the fleet,” he said, adding that he also encourages directors to think about what benefits they hope to see with a transition. School transportation directors should be asking what financial, environmental and operational benefits the energy source can provide, he advised. White with IC Bus added that ride-and-drive events
fully immerse customers and other stakeholders into the look, feel and experience behind ownership of the ve- hicle. “It gives drivers the opportunity to experience the performance, safety and technology features and driver amenities the bus offers,” she said. “When a customer drives the IC Bus Electric CE Series school bus, they realize two things: one it’s the traditional school bus they know and love based on the ‘driver first’ area of the CE Series school bus, and two the technology is demystified showing customers that it performs just as well, if not better than a traditional ICE unit.”
