and breathe,” he recalled. Shortly after returning home to Lewistown, Montana, he said involved teachers of his youngest riders to help with an evacuation drill at the school. He has also talked to the parents of children who use wheelchairs about bus evacuation. “The teachers had never done this and did not know what was involved in the evacuation. They were very interested and told me they were happy that I involved them. I really believe all schools should involve teachers in the evac- uation drills so they can also talk to the students about how they should be done,” he said. “I believe the best thing I have done … is to involve the teachers and parents in the ideas I’m trying to implement. Building that relationship with the parents and staff makes sure we are all on the same page and that we are setting the students up for success by not disrupting their day.” Boyles noted that workshops about effective communication have changed the way he interacts with students on the bus, too. He now makes a point of encouraging and acknowledging students for their positive be- havior rather than emphasizing behavior he doesn’t want to see. “Instead of saying, ‘Sit down,’ I’ve changed to ‘I need you to sit down and put your seatbelt on so we can all be safe,’” Boyles explained “I’ve also learned that when a student on the bus is doing something they should not be doing, I try to talk to them about anything I think will distract them from doing what they are doing.” He added that he makes a point never to contradict what his bus aide teaches or directs the students to do. “If I need to say anything, I wait until she is finished talking, then I will add a little to validate what she said,” he added. “She and I never talk to a student at the same time. Only one adult talks at a time.” He said he is also more mindful that maintaining consistent voice pitch


and volume contribute to students’ comfort and calmness. As he looks forward to implementing more TSD information, Boyles


added, “I’ve said this before and I’ll say it many more times: When you implement new ideas, change only one thing at a time. That way you know what works and what doesn’t.” ●
