Y OUR FEDER A TION OCTOBER REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL F

all Representative Council was held on October 7 and 8, with delegates participating over Zoom. Delegates debated motions and elected repre-

sentatives to Representative Council Stand- ing Committees. President Hammond ad- dressed the delegation, commending local leaders for their tireless work supporting members and advocating for a safe return to school. He also talked about the excellent job elementary educators are doing, adjust- ing to teaching in class and online during this pandemic. “Our members have been doing a fantastic job whether they are in a classroom, online or unfairly trying to juggle both. They have really gone above and beyond to create a welcoming environment for children as they started school in September. We see that the underfunding and the challenges we had be- fore the pandemic have become even more evident during a crisis. Large classes and

a lack of support for students with special needs, it’s all compounding.” President Hammond reflected on the

judge’s dismissal of ETFO’s health and safety case before the Ontario Labour Re- lations Board on a technicality. “ETFO and the other affiliates were trying to establish provincial standards on class size and dis- tancing, cohorts for students and mem- bers, masking, ventilation and bussing. Now we are all left to forward individual complaints about health and safety viola- tions, one at a time, for adjudication. This is not a sensible approach to the problem of the pandemic but we have become used to a lack of sense from this government,” he said. “Stay strong my friends,” he con- cluded, “we still have some rocky months ahead of us but we will get through this together. Thank you for everything you do and stay well.”

EDUCATION AFFILIATES MEDIA CONFERENCE ON SAFE SCHOOLS

O

n October 7, ETFO, OSSTF, OECTA and AEFO held a press conference to respond to the government’s dismissal of our

health and safety case before the Ontario Labour Relations Board. The press confer- ence featured public health experts speaking about Ontario’s flawed return to school plan and the measures that need to be put in place to keep students and educators safe. Toronto Professor and Epidemiologist Dr. David Fis- man, Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Popu- lation Disease Modeling and University of Guelph Professor in Epidemiology Dr. Amy Greer and Dr. Jeff Siegel, Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto and a specialist in indoor air quality, ventilation and filtration all spoke about the importance of smaller classes to allow for physical dis- tancing, universal masking for students of all ages and the need for adequate ventilation for every classroom in Ontario.
