REDUCING EMISSIONS AND IMPROVING EFFICIENCY
D oKaSch is committed to addressing both sustainability and
efficiency throughout its operations. The company’s Opticooler® RAP, designed to transport temperature-sensitive goods, boasts a 40 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional passive solutions.
“The reduction is achieved during the flight — the most impactful phase in
terms of emissions,” said Edwin Visser, DoKaSch’s chief commercial officer (CCO). “What makes the difference is how efficiently we use a ULD position within the aircraft. Our Opticooler® RAP carries five Euro pallets in the same space where passive solutions typically fit only four.” This design maximises space efficiency within the aircraft and significantly
reduces emissions. In addition, the Opticooler® RAP container is 24.8 percent lighter than its passive counterparts, further reducing emissions per pallet and enhancing aircraft efficiency during flights. Visser emphasised: “Even more importantly, our container is up to 24.8
percent lighter than four best-case passive containers occupying that same ULD space. This combination — higher payload per position and lower overall weight — significantly reduces emissions per pallet.”
Maximising space utilisation Beyond reducing emissions, improving space utilisation plays a critical role in
enhancing overall operational efficiency. Aircraft capacity is defined by ULD (unit load device) positions, and each one is valuable. “Aircraft capacity is defined by ULD positions — and each one counts,” Visser said. Traditional passive cold chain solutions typically use four Euro pallets per
ULD position, but DoKaSch’s Opticooler® RAP accommodates five, offering 25 percent more volume within the same aircraft footprint. This increase in efficiency results in improved sustainability per pallet transported, especially in airfreight’s high-emission environment. “Using space more efficiently means significantly better sustainability per
pallet — without changing flight operations,” Visser explained. By improving space utilisation, DoKaSch helps its clients achieve notable
environmental benefits without altering overall flight operations. Visser added: “That’s 25 percent more volume moved using the same aircraft
footprint. In high-emission environments like airfreight, using space more efficiently means significantly better sustainability per pallet — without changing flight operations.”
Lightweight design Weight reduction in airfreight containers is another crucial factor in enhancing fuel efficiency and minimising carbon emissions. DoKaSch’s containers have
been engineered to be both robust and lightweight, offering a balance that improves fuel consumption and reduces emissions per unit transported. “We’ve carefully engineered our containers to be robust yet lightweight.
Lower tare weight improves fuel efficiency during air transport, especially when combined with high payload volume,” Visser said. This design philosophy not only helps companies transport more goods per
flight but also supports more efficient logistics, making the cold chain process both greener and more cost-effective. “Lower tare weight is key to improving fuel efficiency during air transport, particularly when paired with higher payload volume,” Visser added.
Goals and initiatives DoKaSch’s
long-term sustainability strategy goes beyond just reducing
CO2 emissions. The company is committed to making a tangible impact on environmental sustainability by adopting renewable energy sources in its production processes and designing its Opticooler® units to be fully reusable. “We take our responsibility seriously,” Visser stated. “Our production already
relies on renewable energy sources, and our Opticooler units are fully reusable — designed to stay in service for many years.” The company is also working on creating a more circular cold chain solution,
where the reuse of containers and materials helps minimise waste and increase operational efficiency. “Our sustainability strategy combines environmental stewardship with
operational excellence, ensuring that we deliver not just performance but also a greener cold chain solution,” Visser explained.
Harnessing technology In addition to physical design improvements, DoKaSch has heavily invested in technology to enhance its cold chain solutions. One area of focus has been the use of AI in tracking and monitoring. “AI helps us increase container availability through better reuse, faster repair
turnaround, and optimised fleet management,” Visser explained. “It allows us to make smarter operational decisions and improve how we position and service our containers worldwide — which in turn benefits our customers with greater reliability and flexibility.” Moreover, the company plans to introduce new digital solutions aimed at
improving visibility, control, and service. “Customers will benefit from real-time access to location and several key
performance parameters,” Visser said. “This enhances transparency and enables smarter decision-making throughout the entire transport process — helping ensure that every shipment stays on track and within required conditions.”
