AI REVOLUTIONISES AIRFREIGHT WITH EFFICIENCY, SAVINGS, INSIGHTS
“Over the next five years, AI integration is expected to deepen across the airfreight value chain. Autonomous ground handling systems and AI-driven scheduling tools will streamline airport operations.”

rtificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming airfreight management by enhancing operational efficiency, reducing costs, and improving decision-making. At present, AI is being deployed in predictive analytics for demand forecasting, dynamic pricing, and route optimisation. Machine learning
algorithms analyse historical and real-time data to optimise cargo loads, reduce fuel consumption, and minimise delays. Computer vision is increasingly used in automated cargo inspection and inventory tracking, improving accuracy and reducing manual effort. Over the next five years, AI integration is expected to deepen
across the airfreight value chain. Autonomous ground handling systems and AI-driven scheduling tools will streamline airport operations. Natural
language processing will enhance customer
service through intelligent chatbots and voice interfaces, while blockchain integrated with AI will provide greater transparency and security in documentation and customs processes. AI will also play a key role in sustainability, supporting carbon
emissions tracking and optimisation strategies. As data ecosystems mature and 5G infrastructure expands,
real-time
insights will become standard, enabling predictive maintenance and end-to-end visibility. However, widespread adoption will require industry-wide collaboration, regulatory alignment, and robust data governance. The airfreight sector is poised for a digital evolution, with AI at the heart of future competitiveness and resilience. CHAMP Cargosystems has launched CHAMPA2Z Scan to digitalise
the processing of paper Air Waybills, reducing the average human error rate and generating time savings of up to 80%. CHAMP A2Z Scan was designed to give airlines and ground handling agents (GHAs) the ability to bypass this time-consuming manual labour, instead uploading digital AWBs to a specially designed AI scanner, which turns the image into text and compares the data automatically. CHAMP A2Z Scan leverages AI and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technologies which enable the accurate extraction of data from paper Air Waybills as well as allowing the system to learn from this data. As it grows, CHAMP A2Z Scan will be able to adopt and input corrections made by back-office agents to the documents, further
reducing manhours spent amending errors. Thanks to
CHAMP’s open cargo platform and leading Application Programming Interface (API) program, CHAMP A2Z Scan automatically looks up any corresponding AWB data in your cargo management system and automates the comparison between the two – highlighting any discrepancies for manual.
CHAMP Cargosystems and IAG Cargo partner IAG Cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group, has partnered with CHAMP Cargosystems to adopt CHAMP A2Z Scan, an AI-powered application that automates the conversions from paper to digital Air Waybills (AWBs) and other documents. The partnership follows a recent successful trial. CHAMP A2Z Scan, a new service powered by CHAMP’s Cargospot-
neo platform, is designed to help airlines and ground handling agents (GHAs) automate Air Waybill (AWB) data entry for consolidation with all downstream processes and systems. The tool delivers significant time savings, streamlining processes,
preventing delays, and driving efficiency across operations. These efficiencies are unlocked by utilizing Artificial Intelligence
(AI) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, which enables the accurate extraction of data from paper Air Waybills, as well as allowing the system to learn from this data. CHAMP and IAG Cargo collaborated to create a custom solution that
supports customers transitioning from paper Air Waybills to digital Air Waybills. Through this integration, IAG Cargo customers can access CHAMP A2Z Scan capabilities through the IAG Cargo portal using a Single Sign-On (SSO) login, ensuring a smooth user experience. David Walker, chief digital and information officer at IAG Cargo
said: “This partnership with CHAMP marks another important step in our digital transformation journey. By integrating A2Z Scan, we are making it easier for customers to transition to digital AWBs, and this will drive greater efficiency across our operations.” Lucas Fernandez, VP innovation and insights at CHAMP said:
“CHAMP A2Z Scan is the first of our tools to be 100% AI-based and can bring numerous benefits to customers like IAG Cargo. This is an important strategic move on their part, and I congratulate their commitment to digitalisation in air cargo.”
