SUPPLEMENT
IATA-led initiative promoting standardised processes and real- time data exchange across the air cargo supply chain. For pharmaceutical shipments, Lufthansa offers Cool Chain
Management - using smart containers equipped with IoT sensors that report real-time temperature and route deviations, ensuring compliance with CEIV Pharma standards.
Delta Cargo + Unilode + Bluetooth ULDs Delta Cargo has partnered with Unilode Aviation Solutions to deploy Bluetooth-enabled ULDs (Unit Load Devices). These smart containers feature BLE tags that provide real-time tracking of cargo and monitor environmental conditions. Delta’s network of BLE readers in key hubs (Atlanta, JFK, LAX)
captures data as ULDs move through the airport ecosystem. The system alerts operators to potential issues - like delays or mishandling - before they escalate. The BLE tags also help Delta better utilise its ULD fleet, cutting down on lost units and enabling predictive maintenance scheduling.
Emirates SkyCargo & SkyChain Emirates SkyCargo has integrated IoT tracking into its SkyChain logistics management platform. For temperature-sensitive cargo, particularly in pharma and food, Emirates uses sensors and smart containers that track both internal and ambient conditions. During the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, Emirates offered end-to-
end visibility and condition monitoring for vaccine shipments. IoT sensors tracked every stage of the journey -from loading in
Dubai to delivery in Europe - ensuring strict adherence to required temperature ranges. In 2024, Emirates also expanded its White Cover Advanced
solution, a passive thermal protection system augmented with real-time IoT tracking to serve the growing demand for secure pharma transport.
The future outlook (2025–2030) Over the next five years, it is anticipated that IoT adoption in air cargo will accelerate through widespread BLE 5.0 and 5G integration, enabling faster, energy-efficient tracking. Blockchain convergence will ensure secure, tamper-evident cargo visibility. AI will analyse IoT data to predict risks, optimise routing, and reduce insurance claims. Sustainability efforts will benefit as IoT supports carbon footprint tracking and energy optimisation. Finally, universal track-and-trace platforms will emerge, offering a unified dashboard view for airlines, forwarders, and cargo owners by aggregating diverse IoT data sources.
What is the IoT? The Internet of Things (IoT) connects everyday devices - like thermostats, lights and appliances - to the internet, enabling them to collect data, communicate and automate tasks, creating smarter, more responsive environments for users and systems.
