JULY 2023 THE RIDER /13 We Can Hustle: Transitions “I am one person who lives power-
fully and is brave enough to share what she believes. I know if I feel this, others do too. You want to help them find it within themselves as well- the lessons and per- spectives that have given you the strength to be yourself.” Life can be so complex sometimes
By Shelby Olyschlager Transitions. Something we
all face from time to time. The adjustment of something new can be hard. You lose yourself a little as the old skin peels back and you wonder if it has taken a bit of who you were along with it. You look the same, but somehow you know you aren’t the same. I like to look at transitions as the turn of the page, the end of a chap- ter, maybe even the end of the entire book. And you are still here, breathing, looking for- ward, feeling the new sense of who you are and wondering what it all means to be this ver- sion of you. I have gone through a re-
cent transition. One that is re- ally testing my previous beliefs about myself. I wonder if who I say I am is who I ac- tually am. Am I still living in truth to myself? These questions arise. Es-
pecially as I sit here typing for my article,I wonder:
“Who am I to talk? Who am I to share messages? I am just a person.” Then I add my positive
counter attacks to these some- what negative questions.

or any know-it-all…) • Fess up and be truthful.
Findings could be as simple as a learned habit or as intense as a major impairment. And if the honesty hurts and you’re deal- ing with a truly difficult prob- lem…well, suck it up and do the right thing!! We owe this to our riding
companions and ourselves. Safety is paramount. And re- ally: nothing sours a relation- ship more than neglecting the wellbeing of these beloved creatures. Our fears of what-ifs and the wellbeing of many hu- mans we interact with while enjoying their sport deserve better. ——————— Needless to say, I moved
on to, yet, another facility. And truth be told, it was the right thing to do. Being among those who bullied and demand con- trol through battles of wills, lack of respect, knowledge or compassion, was wrong. After completion of an
“equine behaviour” course (through Equine Guelph), I was encouraged to continue with my approach — confirm- ing that harsh punishment, whether physical or mental, is the slippery slope you want to avoid. I am confident with my
abilities and continue to prac- tice my beliefs — that I could never choose unjustified pun- ishment — just to be right. Resources: *

but I feel it is a paradox of continuous op- posites. I think we all have truths. Sometimes
we try to hide from it but from time to time we cannot contain them anymore. The truth that lies within the centre of your soul breaks through the dark room you put it in. That’s a painful moment be- cause you start to realize what you are doing to yourself. You’re not living in your truth and you’re denying yourself of the life you feel you can live. The pain and discomfort of being less than can be too much for some of us. When that hap- pens we have options, acknowledge it or ignore it. We can numb and dull the feel- ing with worldly types of creations de- signed to do just that - numb you. When we have these moments of our truth com- ing to surface, it’s always been there wait- ing for you. Only if you have the strength to be who you are designed to be.
Own it and believe in it. What are your possibilities? When you daydream, what do you see? Are you going to be brave enough to be- lieve? Will you find the strength to become your destiny? You are a creator. Create a life that sets you free. Free from the stories you used to believe. Because now you have shed your skin, And you can become anyone you know you can be.
Feel it so much it becomes real, Breath in the newness, Breath out the past.
Now is your moment, and I want you
to choose, the one thing that will always last, it’s you. You owe it to yourself. This is your
life. Make it how you want. Be strong in your desires, be flexible how they come. Remember what it is that lights you up, honor yourself enough to grow the fire that lies inside of you. Grow it. Make it warm and bright to help others along their way too. We can become the change we wish
to see. It starts with you, It starts with me. We all owe it to ourselves to own who
we are. It’s the real you. There is an old story I want to share
about your true and not true self. “A grandfather was walking with his
grandson through the woods, sharing the wisdom he had gleaned throughout his 73 years. Holding the young boy’s hand, the old man began. “Within us,” he said, “are two wolves locked in a constant state of battle – a good wolf and a bad wolf. The good wolf represents all of the good things we seek to be: brave, honest, true, happy, and generous of spirit. The bad wolf represents greed, anger, selfishness, arrogance, hatred, and fear. Throughout our lives,” the man finished, “these two wolves will battle.” The young boy looked up at his
grandfather and asked, “Which one will win?” The grandfather replied simply,
“Whichever one you feed.” Right now, this whole column scares
me to share. My “bad wolf” is saying to me “what if it’s too much? What if the message gets missed and I sound like a
loony? I should just be polished and write something else” But, in the meaning of staying true and being brave, I will share this fiercely for all you beautiful creators too. Let’s shine our lights and light the way for those around us. Shine it proudly and let your “good wolf” win.
