From Our Founder
Remembering MARCH 1990
Well we made it, another
spring has arrived and with it training shows and trail riding are in full swing.
Quarterama ‘90 was now
celebrating it’s 21st Edition and boasting a $2 million dollar im- pact on the Toronto and area general economy. In today’s value that is almost $5 million. Holy money Batman, that is a ton of inflation.. The volunteers of the On-
tario Quarter Horse Association were behind the success of Quarterama and the 21st edition was heading into having another total financial success. As the show progressed with more re- tained earnings a lot of the vol- unteers where replace by outside companies that cost the show far too much and lead the show down the wrong path. Exhibition place passed on
heavy duty costs against the show. The volunteers were being replaced by paid personal. The show started to show signs of trouble. Seven years later the show would close and be re- placed by a private show that lasted only two years. AQHA was advertising
their 50th Anniversary Buckle. I never did get a buckle so hope- fully they will have a commem- orative buckle available for their 85th.
The Solid Gold Futurity
was having concerns as they went into year two of the event. It seems that the problem, in the opinion of the show manage- ment, was with the industry standards not providing guid- ance on disqualifying unaccept- able horses. The 1989 show was the first and only one at that time to achieve a 10 point champion. Morgan Lybbert and Dean
Ross of Alberta were selected to coach the Canadian Quarter Horse Youth team at the 1990 Youth World Cup at Spruce Meadows. Double Horseshoe Tack
Shop of Belleville held their 10th Annual Consignment Horse sale on May 12,1990. Bill Oja wrote about the St.
Catharines Fiddle Country Her- itage 14th Annual Fiddle Show and Dance at Br, 24 Royal Cana- dian Legion. 34 years later the Niagara Old Tyme Fiddlers are still active. AQHA made some sweep-
ing changes regarding Western Pleasure rules. It seems that AQHA were not amused at the peanut rollers in the Pleasure Class. This was a good decision. Whom ever started this trend
was finally side railed. The Rider was always against this type of western pleasure riding, as we were against calf roping events on the Rodeo circuit. The Rider sponsored the
Canadian Owned and Ridden Barrel Race at Quarterama ‘90 Bailey Trailer Sales, a divi-
sion of Bailey Saddlery of Princeton, Ontario, presented their line of imported Kiefer Built horse trailers. We need to remind readers that Don Bailey Saddlery was the very first ad- vertiser in The Rider. Big Thanks Don. That was almost 54 years ago. The Rider is still very successful, with all competitors out of business or online and leaving us as the only equine print publication in the province, although Canada make it diffi- cult for us. The Canadian Snaffle Bit
Association were advertising their 4th Annual Futurity the event was held at Storm King Ranch. The Empire State Quarter
Horse Association advised that their Auction was a huge success and were advising that quite a number of Canadians were at the event.
Shamrock Stables, owned
by Stewart and Marianna Geil of Cambridge, were advertising a very prestigious horse standing at stud - Bold Secretariat - a 16.3 hh Thoroughbred stallion by Secretariat. No Stud fee were advertised. The Amateur Quarter
Horse team of Ontario was fast becoming a household name as judged by the members and shows promoting the events. April Ionson was the contact for membership. Eqvalan Paste were spend-
ing money on full colour ads in The Rider. Stable Boy, the first barn
deodorizer, was being advertised in The Rider. The AQHA were support-
ing the Miss Rodeo contest with a special AQHA Award the 1990 first award was won by Joni James of Idaho. The search was underway
by AQHA for 100 horses for the Youth World Cup. The event brought 50 young people to the show at Spruce Meadows. Scobey Hartley, Chairman of the event, advised that Canada had a quality team arranged for the event.
The Ontario Racing Own-
ers of Ontario were promoting their Rags to Riches Futurity. The Trials were held on August 5th and the Finals on August 19th. Competitors were being advised to drop by the Rags to Riches booth at Quarterama. Astronaut Roberta Bondar,
a 1968 graduate of Ontario Agri- culture College, was heading to outer space in December as a member of the International Space Station. Roberta was the

first Canadian Woman in Space. She was part of the team study- ing with the Microgravity Labo- ratory Program, involving more than 200 scientist in 13 coun- tries.
Doc Severinson, musical
director of the Tonight Show was featured in a video involv- ing Quarter Horses. The video was presented at the Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas. I have to brag here. I have a spe- cial numbered Will Rogers Belt Buckle. There are not many out there.
Tassilo, with an SI of 102
and 237 Racing points and one of my favourites at Picov Downs, was standing at C &C Quarter Horses at Crystal Beach, Ontario at $750.00. That would be around $1,900.00 today.
My Turn: Well folks I have been To-
tally ignored by Lactantia milk when I challenged them on their expiry dates It. seems their milk expires 6 to 10 days before the printed expiry date. Post Weetabix has not re-
sponded to my request to have a few cases of their cereal sent to my local food bank. I still have the foot long blond hair and the rest of the box awaiting their at- tention. It seems that their Niag- ara Falls plant can’t be bothered. They sent me a form letter from USA and a cheque for $14.00 and a coupon for .75 . I think that this issue is a choking haz- ard and they should have paid more attention to it. I think I will sit on the cheque and mess up their books. As for bad advertising
Bank of Montreal’s current com- mercial is promoting a first place blue ribbon. I can’t figure why they hire American Com- mercial companies. We all know in Canada that a Blue ribbon is second place. We have reached another
spring and show season. Please be careful out there riding. Watch for critter holes. You don’t need to hurt your horses. Check the pasture and take care of the holes. Remember that you are re-
sponsible for neglect and abuse of animals. Lots of reports of puppies and kittens being dis- carded in ditches. Keep an eye out for suspicious garbage bags and boxes. If you have not seen your neighbour for a few days knock on the door. If no answer, contact the local police to do a wellness check. Thanks for looking down
in this corner. Aidan W. Finn CD Founder of The Rider 1970

Obituary It is with great sadness to us that our beloved
Martina Morell-Cady
wife, daughter, sister, dear friend and fine eques- trian, Martina Morell-Cady, left us on March 6, 2024. Her life cut inexplicably short by a brain aneurysm and stroke. Martina was born April 18, 1978, in Braford-
Toronto Canada to Craigey and Martin Morell. The family moved to New York in 1998 and Martina maintained dual citizenships with her new country. Introduced to horses at an early age, Martina
in her lifetime became a highly accomplished equestrian rider and trainer. She won numerous World, AQHA, and Congress awards and champi- onships, including the 2013 Carolina Classic Rein- ing Show. Here she was the first woman to win the open division in the longest running reining show at that time. This would jump start her career. Besides horses, Martina was an excellent
cook and her made-from-scratch spaghetti sauce, caramelized onions, fresh cucumber salad were de- lectable. She also loved gardening, a great cup of coffee, and her numerous furry canine companions. Martina’s gift to us was her loyalty and her
friendship. Now residing in Ocala, Florida, Martina is
survived by her loving husband and soul mate, Kyle Cady. She is survived by her father and mother-in-law, Carla and Kendall Cady of Bara- boo. Also surviving are her brother and sister-in- law, Craig and Talin, father, Marty, and families of Ocala, Florida, and sister, Cecelia, and family of Ontario, Canada. She leaves many close and dear friends in the horse community as well. She had a special relationship with her dear
mom, Craigey, who preceeded her in death in 2021. A celebration of life will be held in Ocala,
Florida on Saturday, March 23. Memorials may be made in her memory to the
