STEAM CLEANING

SPONSORED BY: MATRIX CLEANING SYSTEMS Go chemical-free with steam

Matrix Cleaning Systems explains the ‘where’ and ‘how’ of chemical-free kitchen cleaning.

Cleaning and disinfecting Steam cleaning is an incredibly effective method of tackling all areas that need to be cleaned: go beyond the basic and obvious, and utilise your steam cleaner from exhaust fans to rubbish bins.

With cleaning and disinfecting on everyone’s mind lately, you might be delighted to learn a dirty little secret: steam can do both. The great thing about steam is that it will disinfect. The temperature that water turns to steam, 100°C, will kill bacteria including those that cause odours. So, when choosing a machine, ensure it reaches that temperature.

Once you know how effective steam is on grease and dirt, you’ll be tempted to use it on everything. However, be cautious: steam works best for most applications, but definitely not all. You don’t want the high temperature to melt a surface and certainly, for cleaning larger areas, it’s not always the most efficient.

Cleaning is a dream with steam Equipment wheels: Not only does steam clean quickly, easily and effectively, it can also disinfect. Steam will loosen and dissolve grease that’s stuck in between castor wheels and brakes. Simply steam and agitate with a brush, then you can easily wipe it away with a microfibre cloth, or vacuum from the floor surface if you have a steam and vacuum system.

Degreasing exhaust fans: An item sometimes forgotten, the metal filters can get clogged with grease. An excellent way is to lay them on a flat surface and give them a blast with steam, dissolving the grease.

Tiled backsplash: This has to be up there with the most- hated kitchen chores. It is a pain to scrub and hard to reach tile backsplash. However, a blast of steam can get in all the nooks and crannies and peel off dried-on splatters easily.

Disinfecting work surfaces and cutting boards: After cutting or handling raw meat, poultry, or fish, a quick wipe down then stream of steam will kill any lingering bacteria and leave your work surfaces spotless. Just make sure the materials are ones that can withstand the heat, like natural

stone, stainless steel, or silicone.

Degreasing the oven: Always take care if the oven is hot. Thought your microwave was bad? Ovens get much more caked- on residue, and can be tough to access. Steam will loosen it up so you can simply wipe it away.

Restoring glory to your grill: Gas grills can be tough to clean, but a steamer will do the job inside and out. Grab those grates and scrub with a wire bristle brush for a new look.

Polishing stainless surfaces:While stainless steel surfaces are a popular decorating choice, they collect fingerprints and streaks like nobody’s business. However, steam makes it all better. Just wipe appliances, drawer pulls, faucet handles, light fixtures etc., with a microfibre cloth after steaming and they will look pristine again. In addition, they will be disinfected.

Removing stains from grout: While you technically could steam an entire kitchen floor, it’s time consuming, but can be very effective when using a steam mopping system. Nevertheless, for tough stains like tomato paste that’s discolouring your grout, there can be nothing better than steam – it can work wonders.
