TRAINING & EDUCATION

FIX UP YOUR TILING TECHNIQUES

We find out more about the training courses offered by BAL that have been trusted by tilers and contractors nationwide for over 25 years.

As the first adhesive manufacturer to open a specialist training centre in 1992 for standards and fixing techniques, BAL understands that quality workmanship is paramount to ensure that installations last the test of time.

Since it began to offer training courses to help tilers and flooring contractors maximise their skills, more than 100,000 people have received training from BAL, with more than 17,000 people trained at a BAL training centre.

In fact, since the company opened the doors to its new Innovation and Technology Centre (ITC) in Stoke-on-Trent in March 2015, nearly 3,000 people have been trained at the new site.

Complete with a 40-seat auditorium (with standing viewing platforms), practical training bays, breakout areas and meeting rooms, the new facility leads the way in training and development in tiling and flooring.

Maintaining high standards and fixing techniques helps to prevent poor practices and

incorrect specifications which can have a negative impact for all in the industry.

Dave Rowley, Training Manager at BAL, said: “I believe that training is vital to the continued success of the company and the industry in general.

“Maintaining high standards and fixing techniques helps to prevent poor practices and incorrect specifications which can have a negative impact for all in the industry including manufacturers, distributors, specifiers, contractors and fixers.

“At BAL, training is a key priority, which is why we have invested in our Innovation and Technology Centre to give everyone in the industry the opportunity to learn about the latest technologies and installation practices to enhance their skills.”

To give tilers and prospective tilers the skills they need, BAL has relaunched its intensive five-day wall and floor tiling course.

The course combines modern training techniques, including presentation, workshops, demonstrations as well as “hands on” practical work in individual bays designed to reflect real life installations.

“Our five-day wall and floor tiling was always a popular course so following a number of requests specifically tilers and tiling contractors we have decided to relaunch and bring this course up-to-date with modern standards, products and techniques.

“This course is great for tilers of any experience, from apprentices starting out in their careers, to experienced tilers looking to refresh their knowledge and skills,” Dave continued.

The five-day course provides delegates with the skills and knowledge to use and mix professional adhesives and grouts onto realistic backgrounds.

Delegates will develop a full understanding of floor and wall backgrounds, identification and preparation and practice in the use of setting out, tile fixing, tile cutting, cutting tools, and tile trims.

Throughout the course, they will also develop an appreciation of the application and use of all types of adhesives and grouts, including epoxies and movement joints, both profile and sealants. Delegates will practice mixing, spreading, appropriate tool use, types and specifications.

As well as practical training, the course also includes a tour of BAL’s world-class manufacturing facilities, R&D and Quality Control laboratories.

On completion of the course, delegates will receive a BAL Certificate of Attendance, literature and BAL product worth more than the cost of the course at average trade prices.

BAL has also recently teamed up with The Tile Association (TTA) to support the quality assured assessment of experienced tiler to NVQ Level 2. Part funding has also been secured for NVQ EWPAR/OSAT Training at BAL to help fixers obtain their CSCS cards – which are needed for site work.

This initiative will benefit the industry by promoting and supporting a skilled and qualified workforce, which will stimulate the market by providing a route to qualification for experienced operatives via onsite assessment.

The training comprises a one-day course which can be carried out at either of BAL’s Training Centres, which are in Trentham and Bristol. Assessors can also visit customers onsite, although there is an additional charge for this.
