STONE & TERRAZZO ENDURING APPEAL

Isabel Fernández, Director of Quorn Stone, outlines the top trends in flooring for this year and beyond.

When it comes to renovating, extending, or creating a new home, flooring is at the heart of every space, bringing together all your design choices with ease. This year, as we celebrate 30 years of Quorn Stone, our love for beautiful stone flooring remains at the centre of what we do.

Great flooring continues to shape the character and flow of any interior. Whether you’re working on a period property or a new build, these five standout trends offer timeless ideas to help your home come alive.

TEXTURED FLOOR TILES

Texture is taking centre stage this year, with tumbled limestone leading the way. These tiles bring a tactile, organic quality to interiors, especially in kitchens where homeowners are blending traditional charm with contemporary finishes. Textured grey stone is particularly popular for its understated elegance.

IVORY STONE-EFFECT TILES

Ivory tones offer a soft, neutral palette that suits both modern and country-style homes. Stone-effect porcelain tiles are now more realistic than ever, delivering the look of natural stone with added durability and ease of maintenance.

MARBLE FLOORING

Marble remains a symbol of luxury and sophistication. From classic Carrara white to bold, dramatic veining, marble tiles are being used to elevate hallways and living spaces. Chequerboard patterns and cabochon inserts are especially on trend for creating a classic statement.

HONEY BEIGE LIMESTONE

A perennial favourite, honey beige limestone is versatile, warm, and enduring. Its ability to complement any colour scheme makes it a go-to choice for those seeking timeless appeal and long-lasting quality.

HERRINGBONE LAYOUTS

Traditionally used on walls, herringbone patterns are now being embraced for flooring. Limestone bricks laid in this distinctive style add rustic charm and visual interest, perfect for hallways, kitchens, and open-plan spaces.

With herringbone growing in popularity, let’s take a moment to explore this option that is suitable for any room, inside or outside the home.

IS A HERRINGBONE FLOOR A GOOD IDEA?

Absolutely. A herringbone floor is an elegant way to introduce character to your home. Its distinctive pattern naturally helps to draw the eye through a room, creating a subtle sense of movement and depth. It is a perfect way to add interest to your floor without it overpowering the room.

16 WHAT IS THE RULE FOR HERRINGBONE?

The beauty of the herringbone pattern lies in its symmetry and precision. Traditionally the tiles are laid at a 90-degree angle to create the classic ‘V’ shape. We would recommend starting the pattern from the centre of the space and working outwards, this helps to ensure the layout feels balanced. If your tiles feature any tonal variation, choosing different shades across the floor will ensure a natural and seamless blend of tones. So long as the width of the tile is half or less than the length of the tile, a herringbone pattern can be achieved.

IS HERRINGBONE FLOORING MORE EXPENSIVE TO LAY?

Laying a herringbone floor requires more time and skill than a standard pattern, which can often mean a higher fitting cost. The intricate pattern will require a skilled installer, especially when working with natural stone. That said, its timeless appeal makes it a truly worthwhile investment.

WHAT IS THE BEST TYPE OF HERRINGBONE FLOORING?

The area you are looking to renovate, and personal style will help to determine the best herringbone floor for your client. Herringbone will effortlessly complement every home, from cosy cottages to contemporary homes; making it a perfect choice for many with its timeless pattern that adds subtle character and warmth.
