REGULAR A DAY IN THE LIFE
Each month we catch up with a health & safety professional to find out about their varied work/life balance. This month we caught up with John Allam, Operations Director at Amthal Fire & Security
Other days I may be more office based, supporting the guys or offering telephone support for the external teams.

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES? Primarily my role is to ensure the team operates
as seamlessly as possible, but also that our engineers are up to date with compliance, training and technical knowledge (often provided on site).
At the same time, Amthal works in a number of different, often sensitive environments such as healthcare and schools, so it’s my role to consider the necessary checks such as CRB are in place. I also make sure as a company we have all the necessary equipment to ensure our own health and safety both in the office and on site.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY? I was doing mobile discos at the weekend and
I met other DJs who were in the (fire and security) industry. Initially I was inspired that they drove company cars and (showing my age) they had mobile phones. But more than that, they seemed to really love what they were doing, and that passion motivated me – I wanted some! Now I share their enthusiasm.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE THIS JOB? I left school and did a Youth Training Scheme
(YTS) course in motor mechanics, before working at a Land Rover dealer as a mechanic for four-and-a-half years. It’s around then I started mobile discos too.
WHAT DO YOU DO IN A TYPICAL DAY? I don’t think there is a ‘typical’ day as it’s such
a varied role – one of the reasons why I love my position. Some days are technical where I’m designing integrations between equipment or focussing on fire alarm or security systems – all whilst ensuring they can work to comply with latest standards and achieve their intended objectives.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OR PROUDEST WORK MOMENT?
We did a company video involving pretty much the whole team to raise awareness of who we are, what we do and encourage recruitment. What really struck me was from starting the company with our Sales Director, with an old van and £500, we have grown into a million pound plus business, employing over 40 staff members.
WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? My favourite part of the job has to be being out
on site with my team, particularly when we need to pull together to resolve a particularly difficult fault or overcome a complicated installation issue, leaving clients with complete peace of mind that their property is safe and secure.
“With new smart technologies
coming in, and evolving at a faster rate than ever, it’s integral to keep up.”

WHAT’S THE WORST PART OF YOUR JOB? Keeping on top of the paperwork and emails. I am not an admin person by nature (just ask my wife).
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?
My best advice is never be complacent. With new smart technologies coming in, and evolving at a faster rate than ever, it’s integral to keep up. It makes health and safety even more important to ensure integrations can achieve their intended objectives without compromising quality or compliance.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO UNWIND? I love spending time with my family, and dogs.
I’m also a big outdoors fan, so whatever the weather, I love getting out and about. My uncle has a farm so it’s great to drive the tractors and work with the animals.

WHAT CAREER WOULD YOU LIKE IF YOU WEREN’T DOING THIS?
As above, so I’d probably be a farmer as then I’d get to be in the fresh air all the time!
