Hello and welcome to the September/October issue of Tomorrow’s Health & Safety.
It’s been a couple of months since the last issue and, since that warmer period, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released its annual figures on work-related fatal injuries for 2017/2018.
Rather startlingly, between April 2017 and March 2018 the number of
work-associated fatalities increased by nine on the previous year to a total of 144. Whilst the report stresses that it’s possible this change can be
explained by natural variation, HSE Chair Martin Temple said the increase was, “clearly a source of concern”. He went on to stress the value of the
industry and the importance of avoiding a complacent mindset (there has been a long-term decline in overall fatalities since 1981). There’s certainly a lot to consider in the year ahead as we look for further progressive measures.
To help you get through the initial slog that tipifies the return to work at
the end of summer, we have jam-packed issue this month. In recent years mental health has entered the public discourse, and with it the need for businesses to respond to what is fast reaching pandemic levels. One in
four people in the UK will have a mental health problem at some point in their lives.
With this in mind, MHR considers the warning signs that manifest in those struggling with mental health issues and how to engage in a
comfortable dialogue with employees experiencing them. FutureLearn explores the growing area of research into emotional intelligence and
asks what this can do to help improve stress management and employee performance and Osborne Clarke stresses the important of acting quickly to help combat mental health conditions.
Our special features this month also include Hazardous Substances,
