ADVANCING PPE INNOVATION


Simon Ash, UK and Ireland Sales Manager at HAIX, explores how PPE must keep pace with changing reality of work, to adequately protect workforces today and for years to come.


Automation has transformed the workplace as we know it, resulting in changing job roles, methods of delivery and execution, and the introduction of new systems. For trade and safety-critical industries, while it hasn’t removed the worker from the equation, the way people work is vastly different to a few years ago. In construction, for example, the use of AI in projects has risen from 15% to 75% in just two years. At the same time, wider labour market evidence indicates AI is changing tasks more than replacing jobs at scale, particularly in manual and site-based roles. This creates an added importance to the role PPE and PPE footwear play in keeping workers safe in this shifting workplace.

As people remain central to delivery, how can employers ensure that, in the face of evolving tasks and roles, they are adequately protected at all times? In many environments, innovation conversations still focus on major systems, machinery and digital tools, while PPE like footwear is treated as a static procurement line. Yet for the worker on site, footwear is one of the most constant interfaces with the job itself. It influences comfort, fatigue, mobility, concentration and confidence across every hour of a shift. If work is becoming faster and more operationally complex, footwear cannot remain designed only around yesterday’s assumptions.


The challenge for manufacturers is not simply to add more features and call that innovation. Genuine progress in PPE footwear comes from understanding how work is changing at ground level. Workers may now move between manual handling, machine-assisted tasks, digital reporting and more tightly managed workflows, often within the same day. They may cover long distances across varied terrain, spend more time standing, or work in environments where responsiveness and agility are increasingly important. In that context, the best footwear actively supports and enhances performance, not just provides base-level protection.


That means innovation should be judged by practical outcomes. Does the boot reduce the physical toll of a working day? Does it support natural movement and stability? Does it remain comfortable enough that the wearer is not distracted by rubbing, pressure or poor fit? In health and safety, connection between wellbeing and protection is now too strong to ignore and manufacturers must put this front of mind when developing new products.


There is also a broader workforce question. As industries adapt to new technologies, they are also adapting to changing expectations around usability, inclusivity, and

long-term health. Tomorrow’s workforce will not accept PPE that meets a standard on paper but performs poorly in practice. They will expect footwear that reflects the realities of modern work, from ergonomic support and climate management to durability and dependable grip. For employers and safety professionals, that raises the bar on what good procurement looks like. The decision can no longer be based on compliance alone. It must also consider whether footwear is fit for the way work is actually being done.

For manufacturers, this creates a clear responsibility. The future of PPE footwear will be shaped by those willing to look beyond product claims and towards user-led design, field insight and continuous refinement. Innovation is not about novelty for its own sake. It is about solving the right problems before they become bigger ones.


Automation may be changing the pace and structure of work, but it has not removed the human need for comfort, support and protection. The next generation of PPE footwear must therefore do more than help workers meet the demands of the day. It must help them keep pace with the changing reality of work itself in the years and shifts ahead.
