With the successful rollout of the vaccine programme, and lockdown having reduced the levels of infection to a more controllable state, the country is now making its tentative first steps towards reopening. At the time of writing, children have just gone back to school (8th March) and by 29th March you will be able to meet up to six people from separate households in outdoor spaces. There is a cautious optimism in the air that by the summer months most restrictions will be curtailed and a more normal life for many can resume.
Despite this, a degree of caution is required. Health and safety managers up and down the country will be looking at how they can support their organisations reopen safely in the coming months. With this in mind, one of the central features in this issue of THS is Cleaning & Hygiene. Consumer attitudes to cleanliness have changed drastically during the pandemic.
As Matt Hayas, Global Product Manger at Hydro Systems, notes in his article this month, A Manpower Group ‘What Workers Want’ survey of eight countries, suggests staff in the UK are more negative about returning to the workplace that their European counterparts. It is therefore, the responsibility of those in charge of health and safety to reassure employees of the extra measures they have put in place. Dropping the one-size-fits-all approach to cleaning processes and embracing new methods may be one way of achieving this, explains MEWA on page 51.

Elsewhere, in our Fire & Electrical Safety feature, Safety Management Limited delves into the risks of organic dusts in food manufacturing plants, whilst Richard Turner, CEO of Tapiit Live, looks at how seafarers are faring in an age of mental wellbeing for the Mental Health, Stress & Wellbeing feature. Eaton and International SOS also provide feature contributions in our spotlight on Emergency Evacuations.
There’s plenty to get stuck into this month. Enjoy the issue. EDITOR’S VOICE
