AROUND THE CLOCK AROUND THE CLOCK Each month we catch up with a health & safety professional

to find out about their varied work/life balance. This month we caught up with …. Nick Davis, International Patent Owner & Founder of Silicone Hygiene.

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES? Everything. As the Founder and only employee of Silicone Hygiene if I don’t do it, it doesn’t get done. My time is spent trying to raise awareness of my cover through the media and at trade shows and talking with potential global licensees.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY? I started as an apprentice at Pavilion on the Park restaurant and Ryde College of Catering and Hotel Management in Sydney, before moving on the Hilton Hotels.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE THIS JOB? I work as the Logistics Co-ordinator for a global manufacture’s motor racing teams.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN A TYPICAL DAY? I spend most of my days wedded to my phone and computer.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OR

PROUDEST WORK MOMENT? Two really, being awarded a patent and getting the first 3D printed prototype of my Cover. Holding something in my hands that had previously only existed in my mind was very reaffirming and gave me a boost to get it to market.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? Watching the lights go on in people’s eyes as they understand my Cover and its implications for their operation.

WHAT’S THE WORST PART OF YOUR JOB? There really isn’t anything – because I believe in my Cover

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE

STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY? Believe in yourself and remember that your staff are a potential profit centre, not a cost centre.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO UNWIND? I like to meet up with friends over a pint or two at my local, a craft ale bar, and taking Ben for walks around Winchester.

WHAT CAREER WOULD YOU LIKE IF YOU

WEREN’T DOING THIS? I have worked in many industries and enjoyed each one it its own way, but motor racing will always be my passion and I will return to it one day as a Team Owner.
