COVER STORY
COMMITMENT TO QUALITY
Here, Evac+Chair International illuminates how its continuous investment in quality products and services has been driven by a genuine desire to drive up standards in safe evacuation for all building users.
Emergency evacuation has come a long way since the first Evac+Chair was produced at the company’s factory in Birmingham over 30 years ago. During that period, they have established themselves as one of the market leaders and exported all over the world.
Many of the most well-known buildings and prestigious organisations now feature the eponymous Evac+Chair. This represents a good news story, from which the company and Birmingham should rightly feel proud. But, still, far too many buildings and organisations do not have an effective evacuation solution in place.
Evac+Chair is on a mission to address this issue by raising awareness and challenging organisations to do the right thing by protecting their most vulnerable employees, customers and other building users.
Last year Gerard Wallace, Managing Director at Evac+Chair, led the formation of the UK Emergency Evacuation Association and last month he also signed off the company’s investment in a new purpose-built factory in Birmingham to meet increasing demand and to support the company’s UK and international growth plans.
Although Evac+Chair enjoys a high level of awareness and a strong reputation around the world, what is less known is that since the late 1980s, the company has been designing and manufacturing life-saving products in the Midlands through its main site in Birmingham, powder coating facilities in West Bromwich and specialist textiles division in Telford.
Later in 2019, Evac+Chair is moving into its brand- new manufacturing facility on a neighbouring site in Birmingham. This is testament to the brand’s long-term commitment to developing high-quality products for both national and international markets.
QUALITY COUNTS When it comes to saving lives, there is absolutely no room for compromise. As life-saving products, it’s vitally important that the complete range of Evac+Chair emergency evacuation chairs is tested and inspected to the highest standards.
It’s this commitment to quality that prompted Evac+Chair to establish its own powder coating and textile manufacturing facilities. This ensures rigorous quality in every aspect of the manufacturing process and providing customers with confidence in the final product produced.
The Evac+Chair is classified within the EU as a medical device and must conform to the provisions of the Medical Devices Regulations EU 2017/745 which requires all such products to carry the CE mark which is recognised worldwide as a sign of quality. It’s type- tested through TUV NORD of Germany. It conforms to the highest possible quality management system for build quality ISO 13485:2016.
The Evac+Chair does not require lifting, carrying or the bearing of weight by the operator during the evacuation of the passenger. It’s this ease of use that has made it so integral to fire safety and evacuation procedures in buildings worldwide.
Awareness and practice in how to use the equipment is key to making Evac+Chairs a familiar part of emergency procedures. As a company, Evac+Chair has made training and maintenance an important aspect of ensuring the lifetime performance of the chairs.
