NEW REPORT HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR STOP THE BLEED TRAINING

Thousands of lives could be saved in the UK every year if people had the right training and education to ‘stop a bleed’ it has been revealed.

A new survey to mark Stop the Bleed Awareness Day shows that 99.3% of all respondents understand that a person can bleed out before professional help arrives, yet just over a quarter have the skills to prevent it.

Carried out by TyTek Medical in partnership with citizenAID, the barometer also illustrated that 78% of people don’t own or have access to medical equipment that would control a bleed, meaning lives could be unnecessarily lost in the wake of a deliberate attack or mass casualty incident.

Calls are now being made to increase training and awareness of the three simple actions you can immediately take in the event of severe bleed, such as pressure with hands, dressing and press and how to apply a tourniquet.

Individuals can also download an app from citizenAID, which gives you step-by-step instructions of what to do during a knife attack, active shooter, explosion or vehicle attack.

PACKAGING MANUFACTURER LAUNCHES NEW SPECIALIST HEALTH DIVISION

Yorkshire and Washington-based packaging firm PFF Group has established a new health division following its appointment to manufacture 360m disposable polythene aprons for frontline NHS staff and social care workers.

The contract from the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) has seen the company create 100 new jobs and invest more than £2m in custom-built machines, designed and built in the UK.

PFF Group is one of the UK’s largest independent food packaging manufacturers, providing innovative packaging solutions to supermarkets, multi-national food manufacturers, food service and fresh produce companies across the UK.

The company has established PFF Health and appointed experienced health professional Mark Foulger as the new division’s commercial director. Reporting to Group Managing Director Kenton Robbins, Mark brings wide experience of the health sector having worked with several large medical device manufacturers.

This includes how to report the incident, who to treat first, how to treat and then how to deliver crucial handover instructions to medical experts when they arrive.

“Our results demonstrate there is a stark disconnect between knowing the risks and being able to mitigate them,” explained Matt Eccles, Director at Tytek Medical.

“With the pandemic restrictions being lowered, we will increasingly see people moving around and crowds returning to sports and entertainment venues, transport hubs, shopping centres and in the workplace.”

He continued: “It has never been more important to be educated, equipped and empowered to treat a catastrophic bleed and save lives and we want to use Stop the Bleed Awareness Day to urge Government to do more to make training readily available and for organisations to invest in making life-saving equipment easy to access.”

Kenton Robbins said: “Prior to the pandemic, 90% of PPE was imported from China with buying based on price. With supply routes from China closing and huge demand, not just from the UK but many other countries hit by similar shortages, the country was desperately short of supplies. As a result, the UK needed to establish a resilient and reliable supply in record time.

“As we were already in discussions with the DHSC about using our capability in plastics packaging to move into health-related products, we were delighted to quickly answer the call from government for help to produce PPE here in the UK.

“Our new healthcare division will build on this expertise to move into other areas of healthcare production from our manufacturing bases in the UK. I am delighted to welcome Mark Foulger to our specialist health team. He brings extensive knowledge of both the NHS and private health sector in the UK and Ireland which will be invaluable.”
