Hello and welcome to the July/August issue of Tomorrow’s Health & Safety.
Summer is here. With it comes an unprecedented heatwave. At the time of writing, meteorological services suggest temperatures could get as high as 41 degrees Celsius in some parts of the UK, the highest ever recorded. Arco, a UK Safety Expert issued a warning to all outdoor workers, who are at a significantly increased risk of skin cancer. “Outdoor workers,” the company says “are often unaware of the risks of excessive UV exposure, which is responsible for over 60 worker deaths a year in the UK. With the right guidance and safety procedures in place, 90% of these deaths are preventable.” To help employers, Arco has published a range of free downloadable resources, including a new video toolbox talk, which can be found here.

In this issue, Working at Height leads our feature sections, with HR Solutions suggesting that there’s no better time to evaluate safety systems and equipment, especially when above-ground work needs carrying out. Meanwhile, in our Ear & Eye Protection feature, Neal Muggleton, from acoustic experts Minuendo, considers how a smarter approach to hearing loss prevention could eradicate incidences of noise induced hearing loss at work.
For our Respiratory Health spotlight, Tim Turney of Casella suggests that, just as perceptions of asbestos shifted as its impacts on health came to light, we are now seeing a similar shift regarding a substance that many are hailing as the ‘next asbestos’—crystalline silica. Finally, Virti Founder Dr Alex Young looks at the new technologies helping to improve training efficiency in our focus on Technology.
