“30.4 MILLION

WORKING DAYS WERE LOST DUE TO WORK- RELATED ILLNESS AND

WORKPLACE INJURY IN 2014-15.”

FIVE STEPS FOR CREATING A POSITIVE HEALTH AND SAFETY CULTURE:

1

The first step in creating a positive health and safety culture

is to gain the approval of senior management. Once established as a priority at the top-level, it is far easier to drive organisational change. Many companies lead from the front and place health and safety as the first item on their agendas.

2

Another challenge faced by many businesses is a lack of health

and safety expertise. To create a positive health and safety culture, the right people must be in place. Overcoming this challenge could involve recruitment, upskilling current employees, or seeking the services of an expert consultancy. A qualified health and safety department, supported by a consultancy, will have the expertise and time required to develop an action plan for creating a change in culture.

3

Once the right team is in place, current processes must be reviewed

and new ideas put forward to create a positive organisational approach. This is the strategic part of the culture change. It is important to ensure that the new approach is truly proactive and focused on bringing value to the organisation, while being simple enough to earn the approval of all employees.

4 5

These improved processes must then be communicated across the

organisation. Remember, you are trying to decrease bureaucracy and paperwork, so the new processes should ease the pain of the busy workforce. This is a good time to provide internal training on any new software introduced for technology- enabled monitoring.

Gain feedback from all levels of the organisation, and, if possible,

request expert opinion from a consultancy. Use this feedback to refine processes and amend the strategy, maintaining communication and transparency throughout. Remember, one of the key aspects of a positive health and safety culture is continuous improvement, so this step should be regularly repeated.
