ABESTOS MANAGEMENT

EFFECTIVE EXTRACTION

Safe extraction of asbestos from flooring materials requires extra care and attention, says Paul Igo, Technical Director, The Preparation Group. Here he explains how expert advice can be crucial in getting the job done properly.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was once lauded for its versatility, recognised for its heat resistance, tensile strength and insulating properties and used for everything from fire-proof vests, to home and commercial construction. Today asbestos is recognised as a hazardous material and is a known cause of cancer, so it must be identified and treated with extreme caution. It is now banned in more than 50 countries and its use has been dramatically restricted in others. Worldwide statistics for asbestos related deaths are well documented and employers in related UK industries have a legal obligation to provide asbestos awareness training to employees.

ASBESTOS IN FLOORING Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) can still be found in many pre - 1986 buildings. Asbestos used to be mixed with cement and particles and small percentages have been evident in vinyl tiles, sheet vinyl and flooring adhesives, used to secure a wide variety of finished floor coverings. All removal work must be undertaken by a specialist contractor holding the correct certification and their employees trained and qualified in the removal and disposal of asbestos related materials, without causing hazard to themselves, other trades and the public. All projects must be monitored and documentation outlining the works submitted to HSE.

REMOVING THE

CONTAMINATED MATERIAL Removing asbestos involves great risk whatever the type or the percentage, and the working environment must be secured and protected before commencing any works. The correct selection of PPE is essential such as dust masks and breathing apparatus, to reduce exposure. Face fit tests must be carried out every 12 months. Stringent measures must be applied to ensure that contaminants are removed without any handling. Shotblasting, grinding and planing may be used to remove a variety of materials from floor surfaces and they all require connection to the correct dust extraction equipment to suppress
