AROUND THE CLOCK

Each issue, we put our ten questions to a health and safety professional to find out about their varied work/life balance. This month we caught up with Bryan Lawrie, Sales and Marketing Director at Arco.

AROUND THE CLOCK 5

6 1

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES? Arco’s core purpose is to keep people safe at work

and my responsibility is developing and executing the sales and marketing strategy for the business. As well as thinking about our customers, I am committed to making Arco a safe and great place to work.

2

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY? I have worked with Arco from the start of my

career and joined as a management trainee. My father worked for BP, a big Arco customer at the time, so he knew about the company. When an advert came up for the trainee role, he encouraged me to apply and I haven’t looked back.

3

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE THIS JOB? I have been at Arco my whole career. Arco

supported me through my formal education, including my degree and post-graduate studies, which gave me the opportunity to learn through some of the best business schools in the world, such as: IESE, INSEAD, Cranfield and Ashfield.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN A TYPICAL DAY? My day is varied. I get up early and go to the gym

before heading to the office. I spend the first hour at my desk analysing our key performance metrics to monitor the business progress. I often have calls with my team early in the morning, to make sure we are aligned. I meet existing and prospective clients as much as possible and spend a lot of time engaging with the other parts of our organisation around the country.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE WORK MOMENT?

At the Arco sales conference, we take the opportunity to show colleagues the importance of our work. At a recent event, our guest speaker Louise Taggart, who tragically lost her brother in a workplace accident talked passionately about him and how a business like Arco is working to prevent situations like this happening in the future. It was an emotional day and a moment of true resonance across the business which enabled us to elevate our purpose.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? I know it sounds cliché, but I enjoy spending time

with my colleagues and love meeting clients and listening to their challenges and experiences. I am also motivated by the strategic planning aspect of the role. This gives me the opportunity to influence the company’s long and short-term planning, enables me to be a strategic architect of Arco’s direction and to play a role in the future of the business.

WHAT’S THE WORST PART OF YOUR JOB? Observing bad safety practice. It is frustrating

knowing that there are solutions to mitigate risk and yet people still ignore them. It’s what we work towards eradicating at Arco.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?

Find the passion for it. To succeed you have to be evangelical about safety. Practical safety is a good thing for business and you should find the right words to articulate the impact of it, not only on humans, but on society and the economy as a whole. Getting this message across is one of the most important parts of the job.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO UNWIND? Going to the gym helps me to relax and I have

three kids that keep me on my toes. I have found a new passion for skiing and I coach my son’s football team. In my down time I also love to cook.

10

WHAT CAREER WOULD YOU HAVE IF YOU WEREN’T DOING THIS?

I would be an economist. I have a real interest in the political and economic landscape that the role influences. The long-term thinking and broad implications an economist has on the world is fascinating.
