WORKING AT HEIGHT
Similarly, by providing training to our clients, we are able to heighten awareness of the inherent hazards of working with scaffolding and managing safety at height, reinforcing the safety training our partners’ teams have received in-house.
HEALTH & WELLBEING Another key part of keeping our team safe while
working at height is ensuring that each operative on site is healthy and fit for work. This includes any visible health and wellbeing concerns, such as an injury or physical illness, along with health and wellbeing issues that may be less obvious.
We take a health and safety best practice approach to carrying out regular health checks on our site operatives along with random alcohol and drug testing to make sure they are physically able and mentally alert enough for an at height work environment. Last year we introduced a mental health training programme which has been delivered to 90% of our workforce.
Developed as a core element of our training schedule, our mental health training is designed to help our employees identify symptoms of poor mental health in themselves and others and empower them to do something about it. It also helps them recognise triggers that can affect their wellbeing so that they can take action before their mental health deteriorates.
The workshop-based training has been rolled out to all members of staff, including those in office-based roles and the leadership team. It has helped to de- stigmatise the issue of mental health across the whole team by raising awareness of the fact that it can affect anyone at any time. It has also created a work environment where everyone on the Millcroft team knows they can raise any concerns in a safe and confidential space.
The training has been well received and we’re taking a sustainable approach to ongoing mental health support by appointing mental health champions, who can signpost members of the team to sources of help. We’ve also included mental health in our Toolbox Talks programme.
Indeed, the initiative has been so successful that we are now rolling out the workshops to clients and delivery partners, which has also resulted in excellent feedback
CORE COMPETENCY As a company with 40-years’ experience of delivering
the most complex and challenging of scaffolding projects throughout Greater London, we don’t just see health and safety as an important responsibility; we look upon it as a core competency that must be factored into every element of our business.
Working at height is a hazard that’s integral to our activities but a hazard only becomes a risk if it is not sufficiently understood, addressed and managed. By working collaboratively as a multi-disciplinary team, with our clients and with our delivery partners, we

are able to understand the nature of the hazard and manage risk, supported by a thorough approach to training and a safety first company culture.
