SECURI T Y

Sponsored by Secom BE ON GUARD

Security is a vital aspect of any FM’s work, but the cost of developing a truly effective security system can seem prohibitive. SECOM plc, a provider of tailored security systems, has therefore developed Virtual Guard, an affordable and powerful solution.

Most businesses provide security for their premises by installing CCTV cameras, intruder detection systems or security guards. According to the British Security Industry Association, there are up to 5.9m CCTV cameras in the UK. However, many of these fail to provide a real deterrent against would-be intruders. The reason is that most of these systems are reactive rather than proactive: they simply provide images after an offence has been committed. The alternatives – using manned guards or installing new, fully monitored systems – can be very expensive.

SECOM has developed a different approach, which works with both new and existing CCTV and intruder detection systems. Its Virtual Guard product range provides a link between standalone CCTV and intruder systems, which can then be monitored by its Remote Video Response Centre (RVRC).

Alan Blake, SECOM’s Commercial Director, explained: “The cost of a Virtual Guard system is about a quarter of that of installing a traditional remotely monitored CCTV system. Businesses only have to pay a low upfront cost and an annual monitoring charge.

perimeter security. We’re effectively pushing the boundaries of protection beyond the physical walls of the premises. The best defence against trespass is to make people aware that they’re being monitored.”

Internal Virtual Guard is designed for retail premises or any business with a lone worker who might be at risk. It provides two assistance buttons for the employee. One is a non- emergency button that triggers a pre-recorded announcement that the premises are being monitored. The other is an emergency ‘panic’ button that sends a video clip to the RVRC operator, who can issue a live voice challenge and alert the police if necessary.

“The standard Virtual Guard Verified system links a company’s intruder detection and alarm system to specific cameras and those images are transmitted to our RVRC whenever an alarm is activated. The operator can then determine whether it’s a genuine or false alarm.”

Internal and external protection To cover all eventualities, SECOM has developed two other products in the range: External Virtual Guard and Internal Virtual Guard. The former involves an external detection system and uses sophisticated detection or analytics to give an early warning of any trespassers. Pre-recorded announcements can be delivered immediately as a deterrent and the operator can also issue verbal warnings over live audio.

Blake commented: “It turns CCTV and intruder alarms into a proactive system that helps to deter people from breaching the

Manned guards versus Virtual Guard One of the key values of Virtual Guard is that it can be designed to monitor all areas at all times, whereas a manned guard is much more restricted. Some large organisations use a combination of manned guards and Virtual Guard. For other businesses, Virtual Guard is more versatile and much more cost-effective than a manned guard. When compared with a manned guard working a 12-hour day, the entry level installation gives a return on investment in just 13 days.

Blake concluded: “Virtual Guard is there whenever you need it, at a fraction of the cost of a manned guard. Because we have our own RVRC that only monitors SECOM-installed or maintained systems, our customers don’t have to deal with any third parties: we provide them with full, end-to-end security.”
