Sponsored by Earlsmann A BRIGHTER FUTURE

Earlsmann advises on the LED lighting needed to create brighter spaces, save energy and cut carbon costs in the year ahead.

COVID-19 has created challenges for all of us in many ways but, to look positively, it has also given us the opportunity to look at our previous ways of working to see how we can do things better and at the same time create a greener future for us and the planet.

A large percentage of the workforce are still home working and are likely to be for some months to come, only gradually returning to the office. These empty workplaces provide the perfect opportunity to implement office refurbishment projects, such as LED replacement, without causing the usual disruption to staff and production.

LEDs can provide a brighter year in 2021 Royal Greenwich Council needed to install new LED lighting throughout their head office at The Woolwich Centre in south-east London. Earlsmann, alongside its partner NCS Technology, was selected and work started in winter 2020, to be complete by June 2021.

The Council Offices at The Woolwich Centre span seven floors and includes open plan offices, meeting rooms, stairwells and corridors, presentation rooms and the Woolwich Library. Previously all these areas utilised a wide range of lighting, from down lights and flush/inset tube lighting to suspended fittings and fluorescent panels.

Specialist knowledge enables you to optimise

building performance As a specialist lighting consultant, Earlsmann was able to design and trial the new lighting, which involved LED lighting replacing over 5,600 fluorescent light fittings. The existing centralised lighting control system was no longer supported by the manufacturer, had failing components and urgently need replacing. The energy savings and reduced carbon footprint meant that the council were keen to switch to LED lighting.

Earlsmann reviewed the existing lighting over several site visits and concluded that it was possible to use local sensors to control each bank of fittings. These sensors control lighting at a local level rather than using an expensive and often difficult to program, central control system.

Minimise disruption and control costs Continuous luminaires were inset into the ceiling of the meeting rooms and corridors, and to remove the fittings would have caused significant and costly damage to the existing décor. Earlsmann designed and manufactured bespoke new gear trays with self-test emergency packs to adapt these luminaires for LED use. This approach avoided the cost and disruption of total replacement.

Earlsmann also created new LED emergency lighting pods that helped to maintain the appearance of the stairwells.

Earlsmann ensured that each area was modelled to make sure light levels met client and CIBSE requirements, and that emergency lighting conformed with BS5266. Earlsmann’s production of CAD lighting simulations help the Council review and accept the suggested concept. Earlsmann partner, NCS Technology, then installed trial areas to ensure that light levels were acceptable, and for staff to review the results, before rolling out completely.

Helping you achieve energy and carbon

savings of over 60% The new lighting provides Council employees and visitors to Woolwich Library with an improved working environment. The Council’s energy consumption could be reduced by up to 60%, with annual CO2 output reduced by 400 tonnes.
