ago. The result was familiar: frequent maintenance call- outs, the classic ‘leaky loo’ problem of water trickling away unnoticed and slow refill times that couldn't always keep pace during peak footfall.


Working with distribution partner Richmonds of London, Canary Wharf Management commissioned a site survey and specified 20 Cistermiser Easyflush Direct valves to replace the ageing cisterns. Easyflush Direct removes the need for a cistern altogether, delivering a controlled, mains-pressure flush straight to the WC. With no stored water sitting behind the pan, there's nothing to leak. Fewer moving parts means less to maintain and touch- free sensor operation improves hygiene in a facility used by thousands of people every day.


The installation saw 20 units installed over six months (much of the work done overnight to avoid disrupting shoppers) and has delivered more reliable washrooms, lower maintenance demand and reduced water waste, alongside a faster, more consistent flush for users. Plans are now in place to extend the upgrade to the Canada Place and Jubilee Place concourses.


What good looks like Urinals are just as significant a source of washroom waste as toilets, but the same sensor-based technology can dramatically reduce water use. For mains-fed urinals, Cistermiser's Direct Flush system uses a PIR sensor to flush only after use, cutting consumption from around 197,000 litres a year to as little as 15,000, a saving worth over £700 annually, without any change to hygiene or user experience. It's the system Canary Wharf already relies on for its own urinals and the reliability it delivered there was part of what led the estate to extend the same sensor- based approach to its WCs.

For buildings that still rely on cistern-fed urinals, Cistermiser's Infrared Control Valve can be easily retrofitted. It opens the water supply only when the washroom is occupied so the cistern refills solely on demand, cutting consumption by more than 80% without replacing the units themselves.


Taps are another piece of the puzzle. Sensor taps only run when they detect movement and will switch off once it stops while also improving hygiene by cutting the risk of cross-contamination. Cistermiser's Vecta+ sensor tap range also includes an automatic 60-second safety shut- off to prevent flooding.


The financial incentive Reducing water waste is obviously important for our environment, but there is also a financial incentive to act. Falling block tariffs, which currently reward high-volume commercial water users with cheaper rates, are being phased out by March 2030 because, in the Government's words, they're "not appropriate in a time of water scarcity." Smart metering is expanding fast, so wasteful systems will become visible whether operators go looking or not. And with water use increasingly forming part of ESG reporting, a washroom that quietly wastes tens of thousands of litres a year is now something someone is tracking.


Canary Wharf shows what's possible when conversations turn into action: 20 valves, six months and a clear drop in maintenance calls and wasted water, delivered with minimal disruption. For facilities managers elsewhere, the washroom is where the same conversation can start: less wasted water, lower bills, reduced carbon emissions, less maintenance and a meaningful contribution to targets that are only going to get tighter.
