Besides expecting their washrooms to be clean, hygienic and efficiently run, today’s customers increasingly want them to be sustainable. Public venues are often judged on their sustainability credentials, so theme parks have an opportunity here to step up and demonstrate their concern for the environment by signing up to Tork PaperCircle.

Tork PaperCircle allows customers to have their used washroom hand towels picked up from their premises and taken to Essity mills where they are turned into new tissue products. Clear signage in the washroom indicates where visitors should place their used towels, providing a strong ethical message and demonstrating the venue’s ethos. By recycling their paper hand towels, theme parks and Tork can together reduce the carbon footprint by up to 40%.

The developers of the new Universal Studios theme park are now working on sustainable water and waste solutions for the venue. The plan is to treat water on site in a bid to prevent any pollution of the nearby rivers.

It can be a real challenge to ensure that every theme park toilet remains clean and well-stocked at all times and that queues are kept to a minimum. However, venue managers should take a leaf out of Universal Studios’ book. They should plan ahead and anticipate the problems, then address them by providing easy-to-clean washrooms with high-capacity dispensers that minimise runouts. This will streamline the cleaning process, reduce the queues and help to ensure that no summer day out is spoiled by the toilets.
